Enterasys Infrastructure to Support Bolton Hospital’s Integrated Patient-Care Information System & Provide Capacity & Availability to PACS X-RAY Digital Imaging System – Regarded as One of the Flagship Applications Within the UK Healthcare Sector
NEWBURY, ENGLAND -- Enterasys Networks™, a leader in secure, available and mobile enterprise communications solutions, today announced that Bolton Hospital NHS Trust, a large acute hospital trust in the North West, and ICC Communications Ltd., a leading network consultancy retained by the Trust, have selected a high-availability network infrastructure from Enterasys Networks. The new Enterasys network underpins all the processes that, combined, aim to reduce waiting lists and provide patients with the highest levels of healthcare. Specifically, the network will support the hospital’s Integrated Patient-Care Information Support System and provide the capacity to support increasingly bandwidth-hungry applications such as X-ray digital imaging. By enabling tighter integration and communication between departments and facilitating access to multiple knowledge bases, healthcare professionals within Bolton Hospital NHS Trust can now make faster and better-informed decisions.
“Our major challenge in IT is to harness new technologies and achieve a good return on our investment while being sensible about the network’s growth,” said Brian Aitken, Computer Services Manager at Bolton Hospital NHS Trust. “Over the next 12 months, we’ll be looking at giving GPs in the Trust’s constituency access to the network and a central booking system via their own web-driven systems. The network will enable the relevant people to get ‘round the table’ so that when the patient has been through the consultation process, the relevant treatment can be provided and the knock-on benefits felt in the reduced waiting lists.”
Bolton Hospital is a large acute hospital trust based in the North West of England. It provides a full range of healthcare services to a local population of approximately 300,000. Bolton Hospital has a reputation for early adoption of new technologies, and it’s for this reason that it has made an investment in a new high-speed network infrastructure.
Like all organisations in the health sector, Bolton Hospital NHS Trust is constantly setting for itself new standards of patient care and clinical administration, and the new network had to reflect this changing climate. Having utilised Cabletron Systems'/Enterasys Networks’ technology in its multi-vendor network since the mid-1980s, Bolton Hospital NHS Trust, along with ICC Communications, decided to consolidate the network around one vendor – Enterasys Networks.
“The initial implementation has delivered several major benefits: the network facilitates improved access and availability to the Trust’s many knowledge bases, both for clinical and financial purposes; it enables increased numbers of terminals for end users; it allows healthcare professionals to make more informed decisions; and overall, the improved functionality leads to a higher standard of patient care,” confirmed Brian Aitken.
The Enterasys Networks solution was implemented in two stages: three Enterasys X-Pedition (formerly SmartSwitch Routers) switch/routers for a triangulated Gigabit Ethernet backbone were installed first, followed by a series of Vertical Horizon (formerly SmartSwitches) switches for departmental connections, delivering switched Ethernet to the desktops. In all, up to 1,400 network devices serving some 2,000 end users had to be brought on-line.
Commenting on its selection of a vendor, ICC Communications’ Managing Director Arnie Hewitt stated, “The ICC recommendation to use Enterasys equipment for the Bolton project was the result of a successful partnership with Enterasys when delivering services to other key customers. The equipment installed was modular allowing for future expansion, it had proved to be reliable, and port-by-port it was cost effective.”
“I’m happy that our investment is protected. The new Enterasys network will support the clinical needs of the trust – the electronic availability of patient records, for example – as well as the needs of our clinicians, and it will accommodate new technologies as they come on board,” said Brian Aitken. “I don’t see anything that can currently be thrown at it that the network won’t be able to sustain.”
