Cable & Wireless BTN, the web infrastructure provider recently acquired by
Cable & Wireless, today (20 March 2001) announced that it has been working
with online broking portal The Share Centre to build a resilient data
centre to support its online trading activity.

The site, which currently has over 9,000 unique customers accessing their
accounts and dealing online, is supported by a revamped network
architecture that includes load balancing, caching, and SSL acceleration.
These technologies are necessary to give their Immediate Dealing System a
high degree of resilience, speed and stability.

Richard Evans, Systems Manager at The Share Centre, said: "The Internet
site has taken over £10 million of orders in the past month, and that
figure is constantly growing thanks in part to the Immediate Dealing
system we are now operating. This would not have been viable without
system stability, which is the result of the network design and
integration provided by Cable & Wireless BTN."

He continued: "Our site is now highly robust, with the scope to service
even more clients online. Overall, we have 130,000 customers who could
potentially trade at our site, so we needed to consider how to accommodate
these users in the future, and build a network that would scale as we
require."

Web-centric technologies are being increasingly deployed in e-business
infrastructures to deal with the growing number of users, all expecting
faster response and higher quality of service.

John Murphy, Product Specialist at Cable & Wireless BTN, commented: "The
aim is to keep users happy by providing rapid and consistent access to
your services. Load balancing is a crucial technology in building these
highly available web environments. A network that incorporates load
balancing allows traffic to be intelligently shared between available
servers, and for more servers to be added and brought into service as
required, without taking the site offline."

"Caching and SSL acceleration are also very elegant techniques," added
Murphy. "They offload much of the processing from web servers, meaning
that users are served all the quicker. And because they are dedicated
appliances, extra units can easily be integrated to increase performance
further."
