WESTERN DIGITAL SPEEDS AHEAD WITH LARGEST HIGH-PERFORMANCE DESKTOP HARD DRIVE Thursday 22 March 2001 PDF Print Company Introduces 80 GB 7,200 RPM EIDE Product at CeBIT Conference in Hanover, Germany (Mar. 22-28, 2001) HANOVER, Germany - (CeBIT Hall 12, Booth C77) - Western Digital Corporation, a leader in personal computing storage, today announced at CeBIT the availability of the highest capacity performance desktop EIDE hard drive currently available - a 7,200 RPM, three-disk model offering as much as 80 GB of digital storage. The new WD Caviar™ is designed to meet the increasing demands for high performance, expansive personal digital storage. Units are currently being evaluated by OEM customers and are expected to begin shipping to worldwide customers in April. Corporate users benefit from having expansive storage capacity for the ever-increasing storage requirements of business applications, data files and multimedia files, as well as from the productivity benefits gained from fast access to data and applications. Hard drives using disks spinning at 7,200 RPM load applications and access data 33 percent faster than standard hard drives on average, resulting in hours - and potentially hundreds of dollars - of productivity benefit per user each year. Consumer users are provided with the additional capacity and performance required for storage-rich activities such as Internet downloads, digital image storage, movie and music downloads, Internet gaming and home video editing. The third in a series of first-to-market product developments in the performance-desktop category by Western Digital, the new WD Caviar 7,200 RPM hard drive family combines the performance benefits of high-speed hard disks with a new three-disk design to offer desktop PC users faster access to more applications and data than ever before. “WD is providing innovative EIDE HDD solutions at impressive rates and momentum has clearly shifted in the company's favour,” said John Donovan, Vice President of industry analyst firm Trend Focus. “WD has earned the No. 1 industry position for revenue gained from the 7,200 RPM performance desktop segment during CQ4 2000 based on results for that quarter. This success is largely due to the company's time-to-market advantage on its 20 GB-per-platter product family.” Western Digital delivered the first 20 GB-per-platter 7,200 RPM product in August 2000, and in December 1999, the first 10GB-per-platter 7,200 RPM hard drive. “The personal storage needs of customers has been, and will continue to be, Western Digital’s focus,” Richard E. Rutledge, Western Digital Hard Drive Solutions vice president of marketing, said. “With a new three-platter platform, the high-performance, high-capacity WD Caviar line provides our customers a competitive advantage with the option of adding enormous amounts of fast local storage to their products. End users benefit from top desktop performance and the accessibility and security that massive local storage provides.” The new-generation WD Caviar uses the same advanced technologies as the previous WD Caviar model that achieved top performance honours from industry trade media. As a result of Western Digital’s efficiently integrated three-platter design, the new WD Caviar hard drive is as quiet as 33 dBA, based on testing in Western Digital’s mechanical laboratories. The WD Caviar 7,200 RPM family now includes 40, 60 and 80 GB capacities, expanding Western Digital’s overall product mix to comprehensively include capacities ranging from 10 to 80 GB. The addition of the new three-platter design enables the company to effectively serve the capacity needs of approximately 99 percent of the desktop PC market.
