MOBILE TECHNOLOGY KEEPS THE WATER FLOWING AT APOLLINARIS SCHWEPPES Thursday 22 March 2001 PDF Print Bottled mineral water producer Apollinaris Schweppes has improved the efficiency of its manufacturing process by turning its employees into mobile workers. To assist it with the logistics of manufacture, it has deployed secure mobile enterprise extension software from Mbrane and ruggedised handheld devices from Symbol Technologies. Apollinaris Schweppes is one of Germany's best-known producers of mineral water and soft drinks. Every year it produces around 340 million litres of mineral water, 85% of which is sold in environmentally friendly reusable bottles. Formerly, its empty bottles were processed manually at the company's bottling plant in Bad Neuenahr, near Bonn, delaying throughput at the plant and creating a bottleneck in the company's manufacturing process. So the company turned to Mbrane and Symbol Technologies to supply a robust mobile solution that would integrate with its ERP system. What was delivered was a forward looking mobile solution for on-line entry of bottle details that integrated with its enterprise SAP R/3 and production planning systems. Now, as soon as the empty bottles arrive at the plant, data is collected via a ruggedised Symbol PPT 2740 handheld device. This device incorporates both laser bar code scanning and wireless LAN technology and is designed for use in demanding environments. The Symbol PPT 2740 is based on the popular Windows-Powered, Pocket PC operating system from Microsoft. The data can be communicated, in real-time, from the Symbol device directly to the SAP system using Mbrane's Touchpoint software, which ensures the secure and robust delivery of the information from the mobile user into the enterprise system. Chris Cole, Business Development Manager for Strategic Alliances in EMEA for Symbol Technologies said, "This is typical of the advantages that this mobile technology can bring to organisations. Extending the enterprise to mobile workers leverages the investment made in systems like ERP or CRM, providing real operating cost savings and competitive advantage." Gary Holland, Vice President in EMEA for Mbrane said, " The way we work will change radically as companies integrate mobile technology into their IT systems. But until now, the practicalities of providing mobile access to the enterprise has been prohibitively expensive. Mbrane's Touchpoint solution works seamlessly with hardware from the likes of Symbol, and integrates to any enterprise system, over any type of carrier."
