SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES' LATEST IN-VEHICLE RADIO COMPUTER TAKES ON EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS Thursday 22 March 2001 PDF Print …rugged Windows CE vehicle mount terminal for temperature extremes and hostile environments… Symbol Technologies has chosen CeBIT to launch its innovative new vehicle mount data terminal. The VRC 7900 series of Vehicle Radio Computers is specifically engineered for maximum durability and is designed for use within the harsh conditions of distribution centres and factories. Using the familiar Microsoft® Windows CE operating system, the VRC 7900 enables operators to capture data on the factory or warehouse floor and wirelessly download it in real-time to a host computer. Fast two-way communications with management means work instructions and information updates can be exchanged quickly, speeding up processes and enabling employees to be more productive. The versatile VRC 7900 supports real-time receiving, tracking, put-away, picking and shipping applications particularly valuable for logistics and warehouse system management customers. It combines mobile computing with printers and similar accessories while using the latest wireless LAN connectivity to interface with a host computer. The advance design of the terminal supports Spectrum 24® 2Mbps and 11 Mbps data rate radios and makes it capable of using emerging technologies such as Java. Powered by a 32-bit, 206MHz, StrongARM® processor, the VRC 7900's modular design and PCMCIA flexibility (offering Type I,II and III) adds to the terminal's strength. Sealed to IP65 standards for tough industrial environments, it has a cold store heater option that enables it to operate reliably at temperatures as low as -30C/22ºF. In addition, to make it easier to use in extreme environments, the VRC 7900 features a large keyboard to accommodate gloved hands, as well as tactile feedback with adjustable audible tones to confirm data entry and a high-contrast colour touchscreen LCD for the best readability under all conditions. A quick-release mounting bracket easily secures the VRC 7900 to either fixed-mount locations or to forklifts, allowing for fast porting between vehicles. The new angled design ensures that operators may safely use the 65-key QWERTY keyboard and view the 1/2 VGA colour display without obstructing the driver's vision.
