Specially-developed software used by GMP to track Internet users
involved in distributing indecent images of children

Software developed by SurfControl, the world leader in solutions for
responsible Internet usage, has played a critical role in the success
of a three-month investigation into paedophile Internet activity by the
Obscene Publications Unit of Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

The investigation, known as Operation Appal, culminated in the
simultaneous execution of more than 40 warrants under the Protection
of Children Act at 0700 hours this morning, Tuesday 27th March, across
the UK. The operation has been led by GMP, with the arrest phase
involving 25 forces in England, Scotland and Wales.

SurfControl teamed up with the GMP's Obscene Publications Unit last
year, to provide them with specific Internet filtering software to help
Unit's officers locate and track Internet users involved in possessing
and distributing indecent images of children.

Using the software produced by SurfControl, officers were able to more
effectively direct resources during Operation Appal. Where previously,
60 man-hours of Internet checking were needed to produce 16 suspects,
use of the software produced 60 suspects in 16 man-hours. This
helped boost efficiency by a factor of ten.

SurfControl's chief executive Steve Purdham said: "SurfControl is
committed to enabling responsible Internet use in any environment which
requires it, and a key part of this is helping to ensure children's safety
the web. We're very pleased to be working with Greater Manchester Police,
and this is an excellent example of bringing together the different

Internet users - whether at home or in the workplace -- against
or illegal material, and also against individuals with indecent or
