Business Travel Leader responds to BA 'Sector Payments' commission cuts with new systems Friday 30 March 2001 PDF Print Bakers Dolphin Invests £60k in TravelPower to Gain Competitive Advantage Bristol, England – March 30th 2001 - Bakers Dolphin Business Travel, part of First Choice Plc, one of the largest and most successful travel companies in the UK, is to implement an advanced business travel management system. TravelPower, from software specialist, Whistlebrook Limited, will allow Bakers Dolphin Business Travel to offer its business customers highly flexible travel management facilities, including the ability to negotiate custom fee structures. "The travel industry is undergoing major change, particularly with the major airlines reducing their commissions. For example, BA's 'Sector Payments' introduces fixed commissions in April, which may work in the leisure market, but will not sustain the business travel companies. We have developed a system that allows agents to agree a fair fee structure with each customer, providing a transparency of margins. In this way, all parties are happy," said John Richardson, Sales Director at Whistlebrook Limited. Due to go live in April 2001 at five sites within the Business Travel division, TravelPower provides integrated front and back-office automation. Unlike other systems that rely on simple menu pricing, TravelPower will allow Bakers Dolphin Business Travel to agree a tailored fee structure with each customer. The development reflects the travel industry's tightening of margins and the recent adoption of agreed fee travel management. "Our ability to tailor a fee structure for each customer will be an industry first, and we believe this will prove highly attractive to large companies looking to outsource their travel service," commented Alan Field, General Manager of Bakers Dolphin Business Travel. "We can use it to drive down costs, whilst ensuring our service levels are maintained." In addition, Bakers Dolphin Business Travel will use TravelPower to offer customers pre- and post-trip reporting, allowing them to analyse travel budgets before and after they are spent. The system will let customers explore potential cost savings of changing travel policy; measure the benefits of new route introductions. Bakers Dolphin Business Travel is anticipating an increase in backoffice productivity of around 30% with the new system. The company currently turns over £12.5m in business travel. TravelPower provides an automated link to any Global Distribution System (GDS) - the worldwide airline, hotel, auto rental, tour and cruise reservation networks, including Amadeus, Galileo, Sabre and Worldspan. Bakers Dolphin is part of First Choice Plc, one of the largest and most successful travel companies in Britain. The company employs over 800 staff in over 70 High Street Travel Shops throughout the West Country as well as several specialist divisions including Business Travel.
