iOra wins second award to develop for next generation PDA Thursday 29 March 2001 PDF Print 29 March 2001, Newark, CA and Basingstoke, UK - iOra (www.iOra.com), supplier of solutions for managing mobile content, has for the second time been awarded a UK DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) Smart award for its Mobile Intranet product. The award recognizes the significance of iOra’s breakthrough technology for businesses that need to implement a mobile computing strategy. iOra’s Mobile Intranet product has already demonstrated commercial success for mobile laptops, with implementations across a wide range of businesses. This award provided funding to accelerate development of the product for the next generation of hand-held wireless PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant). Gartner forecasts that worldwide shipments of PDAs, which totaled 5.1 million in 1999, will total 33.7 million units by 2004. This increase will be fueled by the widespread adoption of third generation PDAs that offer remote synchronization over wireless links, giving mobile workers access to corporate applications such as scheduling, email and knowledge management. Development in PDAs will see devices with around 1Gb of storage during 2001, with built-in wireless access. This is a huge increase in volume of data compared to the current 32Mb capacity for PDA devices – managing and synchronizing this volume of content presents a significant challenge to businesses, and is where iOra’s solution excels. According to Abha Garg, analyst at Gartner Research, “Security concerns for data, both sensitive corporate and personal data, could limit the broad deployment of wirelessly enabled PDAs, especially in corporate environments. High wireless access costs, incomplete coverage areas and lack of interoperable standards, especially in the short-term, is also a dominant market inhibitor for PDAs.” Paddy Falls, CEO and co-founder at iOra commented, “Research has shown that businesses have a number of key concerns in making data available on mobile devices, including security of content, intermittent availability of mobile and wireless services, and the cost of these services for data transfer. Other current synchronizing technologies do not scale up to managing large volumes of data over low-bandwidth wireless connections. iOra’s approach addresses these areas specifically, allowing businesses to deliver and manage large volumes of content to mobile laptop and PDA devices quickly, securely and cost-effectively. iOra is in a strong position to be one of the key infrastructure enablers in the new era of mobile computing.” iOra’s Mobile Intranet product manages corporate intranet content on mobile devices. This allows the content to be accessed on a mobile laptop or PDA from any location, either wirelessly or offline. iOra’s Epsilon Technology enables updates to the content to be delivered over low-bandwidth dial up and wireless connections at up to 100 times faster than competing technologies, with significant cost savings and productivity improvements. Over the past 18 months, iOra has won numerous independent awards, including e25-listing and a previous DTI Smart Award. -ends- NOTES TO EDITORS About the Smart scheme The Smart scheme provides a package of assistance open to applications from enterprising individuals and SMEs.
