- Solves the serious and growing threat to data security
London, March 30 2001 - The upsurge in use of advanced handheld computers, which can store large
volumes of sensitive company data, will create new security problems for
major companies and organisations. To combat the growing threat of
losing valuable company information stored on handheld computers,
Pointsec Mobile Technologies has today launched a security system
specifically designed for handheld computers. "Pointsec for Palm OS"
protects information stored on handheld computers produced by Palm Inc.
using an advanced access control system and encryption technology.
The most advanced Palm pilots currently available have a memory capacity
of 8 Mb, which is sufficient to store 10,000 personal or company
addresses, 400 e-mail messages and 3000 documents with notes. The loss
of one such device, storing so much data could pose a serious security
threat to an organisation if it got into the wrong hands, and could
cause a devastating effect to a company if an intruder was to access the
corporate network using wireless technology. A handheld computer isn't
just easy to pick up and take to and from work - it is also easy to lose
and steal! If handheld computers become as popular as mobile phones,
the amount of thefts could be astronomic, according to The Federation of
Communication Services over 15,000 mobile phones are stolen every month
in the UK alone.
The increase in the number of handheld computers that are lost is
directly relative to the increase in use. Figures published last month
by IDC predict that the global handheld market will explode in the next
three years, from 12.9 million units in 2000 to over 63.4 million by
2004. As sales increase, so do the number of connections to corporate
networks. According to analysts the Gartner Group, there will be more
than one billion handheld computers and mobile telephones with wireless
network connectivity in use in the world by 2003. Some 600 million of
these will also have Internet connectivity.
"Pointsec for Palm OS" has been developed with this very market in mind
and has been specially designed for users in major companies and
organisations. This latest product complements the already existing
"Pointsec for PC" which is already being widely used by corporations and
government department's worldwide. This is a further step towards
having one security system to protect an organisations entire range of
handheld computers, laptops and PCs. The system protects all stored
information by only allowing the user access to the computer after
entering the correct password. The password consists of a number of
digits or symbols. Where extra protection is needed in addition to
access control, e.g. to protect important addresses, customer records,
credit card numbers and other passwords, the system can use encryption.
"Pointsec protects information effectively by employing a dual layer
principle. Firstly, an effective access protection system is used that
requires entry of a password. If anyone were to attempt to circumvent
this by, for example, dismantling the unit to gain access to the memory
circuits, all applications would be protected through 128-bit
encryption. In other words, this makes the data stored on handheld
computers inaccessible to unauthorised users", says Thomas Bill,
President of Pointsec Mobile Technologies.
Pointsec is developed and marketed by Pointsec Mobile Technologies, a
subsidiary of Protect Data AB. Pointsec protects all information stored
on handheld computers and PCs from unauthorised access. The list of
customers using Pointsec for PC includes Telia, Ericsson, Cap Gemini
Ernst & Young and the US Department of Justice.
