In order to accelerate the migration to multi-application smart cards around the world, the MULTOS Consortium has agreed a changed pricing structure for Key Management Services (KMS) for its highly-secure operating system MULTOS.

In a bold step, charges for individual application load and delete certificates have been abolished. These certificates, required for adding and removing applications on MULTOS multi-application smart cards, now become freely available. This move will further encourage issuers to exploit secure post issuance updating and loading of applications.

From this point on, only initial enablement of cards will attract a charge, reducing the lifecycle costs of cards and encouraging post-issuance application loading and updating. This initiative will ensure that the world's most secure smart-card technology is available at the best possible price, while providing more openness and convenience to card issuers and vendors.

The multi-application operating system, MULTOS, allows applications such as EMV payment applications, ID or loyalty for example, to be added to and deleted from a chip card either when the card is issued or while in use, and over insecure channels such as the internet and mobile phone technologies. By extending card life and reducing re-issuing of cards significant benefits flow through to users and issuers, allowing existing cards to benefit immediately from new services and the tailoring of product to individual users over time.

MULTOS customers are supported by the Key Management Authority (KMA), a third-party certification service bureau which offers encrypted service-level-agreements for card personalisation and loading and deleting of smart card applications. The new pricing further extends the flexibility of the KMA and the way in which card issuance is priced and managed by card vendors.

“This shift in the pricing structure takes away the decision of whether to deploy cards cheaply or securely. Now card issuers, vendors and application providers have the most secure and cost effective smart card platform available," said Steve Everhard, Marketing and Commercial Director of MAOSCO Ltd, the issuers of the MULTOS specification.

"This new approach to the KMS pricing will allow for more flexibility for issuers and card vendors in designing card schemes," continued Everhard. Openly tested by the world's leading security evaluation facilities, MULTOS provides card issuers and application providers with the highest level of assurance that the product fulfils its security claims.

This move is one of a series of new, exciting initiatives for MAOSCO Consortium as it provides a more open, responsive and cost-effective development process for MULTOS, advancing its smart card technology in response to the business needs of its customers.
