Aberdeen Group White Paper Substantiates DM/ActiveRoles Ability to Accelerate
Active Directory’s Inherent Benefits

Burnham, Bucks, April 5, 2001 – Quest Software a leading provider of application management solutions, is featured in a recently released Aberdeen Group Executive White Paper titled “Kick Starting a Directory-Enabled IT Infrastructure: Delegation Rights Management in Active Directory.” The white paper analyses the inherent benefits of directory-enabled management strategies for Active Directory-based environments and profiles Quest Software’s DM/ActiveRoles.™
According to the Aberdeen Group, a leading provider of technology market consulting and research for the investment and IT supplier communities, “The challenge for organisations adopting Windows 2000 and Active Directory is to manage its complexity.” Active Directory functions in a hierarchical manner by consolidating network objects into one central store, but according to Aberdeen, “it is unreasonable – and unscalable – to expect one group of administrators to manage the entire directory.” The white paper recognises Quest’s deep experience (through its acquisition of FastLane) with Active Directory and cites three key benefits that DM/ActiveRoles brings to Active Directory administration and management:
· Simplified delegation of Active Directory rights and tasks through customisable templates;
· Easy understanding of Active Directory’s delegated administration rights through an intuitive, graphical map displayed in the Microsoft Management Control console; and
· Comprehensive auditing of all Active Directory access controls.
“The new architecture of Active Directory presents drastically different management requirements from the Windows NT environment,” said Michael Hoch, Senior Analyst, Aberdeen Group. “DM/ActiveRoles can greatly help companies taking advantage of Active Directory to accelerate realisation of inherent benefits.”

“We have a primary focus to help our customers successfully plan, deploy and manage their migrations to Windows 2000 and Active Directory. DM/ActiveRoles’ role-based design is specifically constructed to simplify delegation and allow network administrators to clarify and manage Active Directory before, during and after migrations,” said Simon Pearce, managing director at Quest Software (UK) Limited.
“The Aberdeen white paper validates the value of our technology for efficient Active Directory management and security lock down,” added Pearce.
DM/ActiveRoles provides roles-based administration and enables administrators to audit and manage Active Directory delegation settings while enforcing administrative policy. Unlike proprietary delegation systems that are intended to replace the standards-based delegation of Active Directory, DM/ActiveRoles embraces and extends the comprehensive delegation model of Active Directory. Being an Active Directory-enabled application, all administrative role information used by DM/ActiveRoles is stored in and replicated by Active Directory, ensuring scalability and availability.
With DM/ActiveRoles and Active Directory fully and properly deployed, the benefit to the customer is a directory-enabled IT infrastructure that helps manage Microsoft .NET applications such as Exchange 2000 and SQL Server 2000.
