Wind River Advances Operating System Portfolio With Two Software Acquisitions Friday 6 April 2001 PDF Print London, UK – April 4, 2001 – Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices, today announced that it signed definitive agreements to acquire all the software assets of BSDi and Eonic Systems. These new technologies extend Wind River’s operating system (OS) portfolio to include offerings for digital signal processors (DSPs) that convert analog signals to digital signals, as well as OSs for embedded UNIX applications. Wind River’s existing software products combined with DSP and embedded UNIX OSs make Wind River the only company in the world that can provide end-to-end embedded software. Wind River will offer its value chain of services; middleware components such as networking, Java-based technology, and graphics; the Tornado integrated development environment; and compatible products from its 600-member WindLink partner program across its OS family. Customers will now have solutions from a single vendor that address the entire spectrum of embedded applications – from high-volume, memory-constrained devices that typically utilise DSPs to full-featured embedded systems that require the capability of a full UNIX environment. This strategy is expected to be particularly appealing to embedded developers who need to use multiple OSs of differing capabilities to quickly build increasingly complex embedded applications. “By adopting these two OSs, one for the small memory footprint needs of DSPs and the other for the large-scale demands of Internet infrastructure designs, we will be able to bring embedded developers the widest range of reliable and innovative operating platforms,” said Tom St. Dennis, Wind River’s president and chief executive officer. “After weighing all of the options, we felt strongly that BSD was the best foundation for an embedded UNIX solution. Along with the commercial BSD/OS and DSP-based OSs, Wind River will be continuing support for FreeBSD, the open source software that is the basis for BSD/OS. The BSD license offers great protection for intellectual property, which is a key consideration for embedded developers who very often differentiate their products through software innovation. And, with its long history and wide adoption, we feel BSD is the most advanced and reliable UNIX implementation in the world.” “The embedded universe is expanding at an ever-increasing rate with greater demands for functionality and time to market,” said Jerry Fiddler, Wind River’s co-founder and chairman. “A single set of tools for a variety of embedded OSs will help developers tremendously by reducing integration and development time. This puts Wind River in a great position to help advance embedded technology and promote developer innovation.” About Wind River Wind River is a worldwide leader in embedded software and services for creating connected smart devices.
