Comverse, a unit of Comverse Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:CMVT), the world's leading supplier of software and systems enabling network-based multimedia enhanced communications services, announced today that it has been selected to enable prepaid services for ZAO North-West GSM, Russia's third largest mobile carrier and St. Petersburg's largest mobile carrier. The agreement allows ZAO North-West GSM to offer the first prepaid mobile services available in the northern and western parts of Russia.

The agreement will allow ZAO North-West GSM to provide mobile services to a rapidly growing subscriber base by offering prepaid services using Comverse's unique trunk loop-around solution. Under the terms of the agreement, ZAO North-West GSM will deploy its prepaid services in phases, launching the first system in St. Petersburg and is expected to support more than 250,000 subscribers during the initial deployment. ZAO North-West GSM has already successfully deployed Comverse's voicemail system providing multimedia enhanced services to its mobile subscribers.

"We are very excited to be able to provide our customers with the region's first real prepaid mobile services with a global leader such as Comverse," said Konstantin Sukhin, Marketing Director of ZAO North-West GSM.

"Prepaid services are a rapidly growing part of mobile service offerings, and Comverse has demonstrated the ability to deliver a flexible, scalable prepaid solution that can serve our needs now and in the future. "We are pleased to further develop our relationship with ZAO North-West GSM by providing our highly scalable prepaid solution," said Gadi Bahat, Comverse Vice President for Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). "The delivery of prepaid services will enable ZAO North-West GSM to leverage the rapidly expanding wireless market in Russia and ensure continued revenue-generating opportunities."

Comverse's unique trunk loop-around prepaid solution reduces the cost of ownership and improves network efficiency by using an intelligent network-based approach that utilises out-of-band signaling to perform critical prepaid call management functions. The trunk loop-around configuration, which does not require any trunk connections between the network switches and the Comverse system, also frees up voice channels that would otherwise be occupied during prepaid call management.

Comverse supports prepaid services and other enhanced services for several of Russia's leading carriers. Globally, Comverse's prepaid solution supports 25 languages in networks in nearly 50 countries.
