Service providers gain new revenue generating application; End customers obtain a complete videoconferencing solution without capital expenditures

April 23, 2001 (Austin, Texas) – VCON, a leader in comprehensive networked video over IP solutions, today announced that it is accelerating the hosted IP video market for service providers and broadband IP carriers by bringing together industry experts to form its Karyo™ initiative. VCON created Karyo to target the diverse service provider market offering a comprehensive solution for the deployment of IP video networks that includes interactive videoconferencing hardware, software and services. Industry specialists currently joining VCON as Karyo members are Activate, MegaPath, RADVISION, V-SPAN and VTEL Solutions.

“As Internet and application service providers struggle to differentiate their offerings from competitors, interactive and streaming video stand out as high demand applications that companies and organisations of all sizes can choose to outsource,” states Roopam Jain, industry analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “Karyo will make it easier for service providers to purchase a total solution and to gain the expertise they would require to deploy a specialty application such as video.”

The lack of quality bandwidth, the critical need for video network management tools and the absence of a turn-key solution have prohibited many carriers and service providers from leveraging existing market opportunities for outsourced video applications. VCON’s Karyo initiative combines leading technology and services from the member companies to provide a comprehensive solution for high quality video over IP and includes the following components:

VCON – will provide its award-winning desktop and group videoconferencing endpoints and its recently announced Media Xchange Manager™ (MXM) systems management tool. MXM is critical to the success of hosted video networks because it provides centralised management for multi-vendor platforms and video telephony services that simplify making a video call for the users.

Activate – an industry leader in webcasting, offers end-to-end solutions that include content capture, encoding/production, content publishing and worldwide distribution. Serving the enterprise and broadcast markets since 1997, Activate can connect thousands of end points in a single session and provides the experience in large scale rollouts that the service provider market requires.

MegaPath – a nationwide broadband services provider, is focused on providing DSL Internet connectivity and business solutions to small and medium-sized businesses, home offices, and telecommuters. MegaPath will contribute to the Karyo initiative by providing the powerful, reliable, and secure Internet connectivity needed for video conferencing applications. MegaPath is in the top rank of business-class DSL service providers as reported by industry watch group

RADVISION – is a leading provider of products and technology for real-time voice, video, and data communications over packet networks. RADVISION offers the broadest set of networking systems needed to enable enterprises and service providers to migrate their traditional voice and video networks to new IP-centric ones. RADVISION's networking products offered through the Karyo initiative include gateways, conferencing bridges, gatekeeper applications, and multi-function platforms for small, medium and large-scale networks.

V-SPAN – offers a full suite of conferencing services including IP and ISDN gateway connectivity, webconferencing, audioconferencing and streaming. Through a portal powered by V-SPAN, Karyo service providers gain access to V-SPAN IP videoconferencing services. Reservation-less web, audio and IP conferencing from V-SPAN will allow service providers to offer their customers the flexibility to create their own ‘ad hoc’ meetings.

VTEL Solutions – is an expansive field service organisation that will provide service providers throughout North America with turnkey video network consulting, installation, technical support and maintenance services on VCON’s hardware and software solutions.

“VCON recognised that carriers and service providers require ease of doing business when they are deploying complex applications such as video,” states Gordon Daugherty, VCON senior vice president of Global Marketing & Strategy. “By coordinating all the pieces that go into creating a successful hosted video market, Karyo offers service providers the flexibility to tailor their video requirements to a variety of ASP or ISP business models.”

Karyo will continue to add new technologies and services based on alignment and integration with the current set of offerings. Karyo will also work with its member companies to develop an initial specification for possible joint technology development in order to bring the various technologies and services even closer together. In all cases, the Karyo initiative will revolve around open standards and interoperability.

A Karyo web site,, is currently available and will include information on member offerings as they become available.
