Users to benefit from secure remote access to corporate networks Cable &
Wireless managed service to eliminate PKI implementation issues

Cable & Wireless, the global communications group, today (24 April 2001)
announced that it has completed a successful trial of its new Cable &
Wireless PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) solution. This is one of the
first global, managed PKI solutions for IP-VPNs (Internet Protocol
Virtual Private Network) and is designed to give a mobile workforce
fully secure access to its corporate network, via the Internet, from
anywhere in the world. Cable & Wireless will be demonstrating this
service at Infosec 2001 (24-26 April, National Hall Olympia, stand
G230).

The ability to securely transact and exchange confidential information
is key for e-businesses, both now and in the future, but previous PKI
offerings have been complex and costly to implement. Cable & Wireless'
PKI is a truly mobile and affordable solution, which has integrated
products from Baltimore Technologies, RSA Security and Nortel Networks.
It will offer customers the benefits of PKI technology, whilst
eliminating implementation and maintenance issues with a fully managed
service.

Cable & Wireless is currently implementing the PKI solution internally
for its own workforce, and is in discussion with selected customers with
a view to conducting product trials with them.

"Implementing PKI technology to truly enable e-business is one of the
most important issues facing industry today," said Paul Schwarzenberger,
Product Manager, Internet Security, Cable & Wireless. "Although PKI
technology has been in existence for several years, its uptake has not
met market expectations. Many PKI pilots have highlighted the complexity
and cost of administering and managing PKI, potential security flaws and
the need for end-users to be technically proficient. Cable & Wireless
has worked with leading security partners to meet the needs of corporate
customers with a fully managed, highly secure, flexible and easy-to-use
solution."

Cable & Wireless PKI features include:

· Private key and digital certificates are stored centrally on behalf of
the end-user making them easy to manage and highly secure

· End-users are authenticated by a PKI Token before downloading their
digital certificates and private keys

· Cable & Wireless PKI is a fully mobile solution allowing users to move
from one PC to another

· As a managed solution, 24/7 support, full resilience and back-up is
provided

· A secure Customer Administration Web site is available for managing
local users

Paul Schwarzenberger will be discussing the development of Cable &
Wireless PKI, and in particular the challenges involved in integrating
different vendor offerings, in an Infosec seminar on 26 April, 13.30 -
14.00, Room 1.
