Products Help Accelerate Digital Video Recorder Solutions to Market

MILPITAS, Calif., April 23, 2001-Maxtor Corporation (Nasdaq:MXTR) and National Semiconductor (NYSE: NSM) today announced the availability of Maxtor QuickView DVR Streaming Software together with National Semiconductor’s Geode™ set-top box (STB) products.

Maxtor QuickView DVR Streaming Software provides the core DVR functions for STBs and other consumer audio/video (A/V) appliances using ATA hard disk drives (HDD). Combining the best technologies from both Maxtor and the recently merged Quantum HDD operations, Maxtor’s Consumer Electronics Business (CEB) developed the new software package based on core Maxtor QuickView technology. The DVR software resides in a STB host system and controls all DVR functionality, supports the recording and playback of multiple A/V streams and popular trick play modes, and provides optimisation across multiple streams and error management.

“Maxtor is committed to delivering solutions that enable CE manufacturers to develop digital video recording capabilities quickly and easily, with a variety of features that provide television viewers with richer, more convenient media experiences,” said Paul Streit, senior marketing manager at Maxtor’s CEB. “Maxtor QuickView DVR Streaming Software is highly portable, allowing developers to easily integrate our technology into a number of different software and hardware design environments in a range of STB designs. We are very excited about working with National’s Geode SP1SC10 platform because it offers the performance and flexibility required for advanced STB designs, and its x86 architecture provides the ideal platform for software development.”

“Maxtor’s disk drive and QuickView DVR Streaming Software products will help companies using our Geode architecture to add DVR functionality easily to their set-top box designs,” said Paul McCormick, set-top box marketing manager at National Semiconductor. “We are looking forward to working with Maxtor. The compatibility of our products enables our set-top box customers to implement enhanced features, while minimising their product development cycle times.”

A Maxtor QuickView demonstration kit will be available in the second quarter of 2001. This demo allows customers using National Semiconductor’s SP1SC10 development system to experience DVR functionality on their development STBs. The Maxtor QuickView DVR Streaming Software will be licensed directly from Maxtor.

The Maxtor QuickView software is also being demonstrated at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas, April 23-26, 2001. Maxtor is in booth S3537 at the Sands Convention Center, where a full line of Maxtor QuickView products, technologies and applications will be displayed.
