Nationwide, which launched the UK's first retail internet banking service in May 1997 and Europe’s first PocketPC mobile banking service in December 2000, is today adding internet TV to its range of access channels.

Initially, users with a suitable TV or set top box will be able to view product information. A full online banking service will be added this summer, meaning members will then be able to carry out transactions from the comfort of their living room sofa.

Jim Willens, Nationwide e-commerce director, said: "As well as rolling out internet TV, we're also developing a WAP phone banking service due for launch later this year. Our aim is to give members a greater choice in the way they do business with us."

Notes to editors:

It is estimated that more than 15 million households will be able to access the internet via their television by 2003 (Gartner).

To use Nationwide's internet TV service, users need a telephone line and suitable internet-equipped television or set top box plus TV with scart socket.

Currently supported systems are BushInternet, ONnet and Q-Zero. The pages of Nationwide's internet TV service have been optimised for viewing on such devices.

To use the full banking service when launched, customers will need to have registered for Nationwide's internet banking service. Users of internet banking can now use PCs, Macs and Microsoft PocketPC-run personal digital assistants (PDAs) to access their accounts in addition to Nationwide branches, post and telephone.

Nationwide launched Europe's first banking service for personal digital assistants using the PocketPC operating system in December last year. This service was enhanced earlier this month. For further details, please telephone the Nationwide press office or see

Nationwide has in excess of 600,000 members registered for online banking (February 2001).
