British American Racing team moves fast to save Grand Prix points by choosing Exchange Archive Solution

Brackley, and Bristol, 2nd May 2001 - Essential Computing, a leading messaging specialist, has announced that British American Racing (BAR) has implemented Exchange Archive Solution (EAS) to archive mission-critical e-mails including engine designs and modification approvals.

The intense pressure within Formula 1 is relentless and BAR is continually investing in new and leading-edge technology to keep the momentum.

BAR’s solution to its e-mail archiving requirements was to implement a 350-user EAS licence installation on its two Exchange servers, which provide e-mail services to all members of the team, including former World Champion Jacques Villeneuve.

EAS from Canadian authors, EDUCOM, works by automatically archiving e-mails off the main Exchange servers according to business needs. Users are still able to access archived messages at any time, either from a shortcut in Outlook or using an Outlook-like web search interface.

BAR needs to retain data for at least 3 years. For example, engineering projects may take several years to complete and technical areas researched a couple of years ago can suddenly become relevant, for example, due to changes in regulations.

Roberto Volo, Head of IT at BAR explains, “We communicate via e-mail with the FIA on a variety of matters, including seeking approval for car modifications. It is vitally important we retain this information. We have heard of other teams losing old communication with the FIA, and because they could not locate this data later, this resulted in a loss of vital Grand Prix points.

“We do not have the resource for someone to manage this old data, and the disk space on the Exchange Servers is finite. We also wanted to implement a solution that provides true Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) and this is what EAS provides us with.”
