New Football Fan Card Important Step Towards Making Football Trouble-Free Friday 4 May 2001 PDF Print KEYWARE PROVIDES UNIQUE SMART CARD SOLUTION FOR BELGIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE New Football Fan Card Important Step Towards Making Football Trouble-Free Zaventem, Belgium- May 4, 2001 -Keyware (NASDAQ EUROPE: KEYW), one of the world's leading providers of biometric and centralized authentication solutions, has signed a contract with the Belgian Football League as the exclusive ticketing software provider for the new Football Fan Card. Under terms of the contract, which is valued at 45 million Belgian francs (approximately $1 million U.S.), Keyware will embed its software onto the league's new generation of personalized smart cards, which will be introduced for the 2001 - 2002 football season. More than 300,000 cards have been prepared for the new season. The new cards, valid for three years, will be available through any first division club. The cards will be personalized for each individual fan and will be required for stadium admittance on game days. It will only be allowed to purchase one ticket per card. Keyware, which worked with the league to introduce the first generation Football Fan Card three years ago, has also signed on as a co-sponsor of the new cards along with Jupiler. Both company logos will appear on the cards. In the future, the fan cards can be used by stadium management throughout the league to better control the flow of crowds around and in the stadium. For those stadiums wanting to provide even greater security for the fans, the cards can also be configured to include biometric data such as a fingerprint. When used with special scanners at key access points throughout the stadium, the cards can offer stadium security a far greater degree of crowd management. "Managing crowds at large sporting events has become a serious problem around the world," said Francis Declercq, president and CEO of Keyware. "The Football Fan Card uses the best available technology to ensure an increased level of security and safety of the fans. In addition, the software on the cards can also be modified later to provide tighter security using biometrics, for direct payment transactions at stadium concessions, and even for loyalty discounts at restaurants, hotels, and other retailers on game days or anytime. Recently, Keyware also partnered with Bull Hungary to develop a smart card system for the Hungarian Football League." Jean-Marie Philips, general director of the Belgian Football League: "Our final aim is to protect people's safety and exclude registered troublemakers. We choose Keyware as our technology partner because they presented the most complete and scalable smart card solution to achieve that goal. We are currently reviewing the possibility of using this Football Fan Card as a physical access system and add biometric verification of the identity of the cardholder on the most critical places in certain stadiums. Biometric verification of the smart card holder's identity could add a final 'layer' of security. Keyware is able to provide us with such a solution through their several divisions." Multiple applications on one single card The Football Fan Card is used today as an advanced ticketing solution, but it can easily integrate other applications such as an e-purse (payment of tickets or refreshments in the canteen or restaurant, etc), or loyalty application (allocate loyalty points to supporter). The Football Fan Card can also allow stadium management to better manage physical access to the stadium by installing smart card readers at all access gates. As a further security measure or for access to private areas, biometric data can be added to the card. This would allow biometric verification of the identity of the cardholder. The supporter would only need to put this card (that contains all the data as on a paper ticket) in a card reader and put his finger on a fingerprint scanner, allowing or denying access. This also would prevent the exchange of cards amongst fans as it gives a precise authentication of the cardholder.
