Virata's Enhanced Embedded Device Interoperability Solution enables development of UPnP controlled devices for Home and Office network connectivity

Virata® Corporation [Nasdaq: VRTA] has announced the world's first turnkey multi-platform UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) software for embedded system developers. The new software is intended to accelerate the move to intelligent, self-configuring,
easy-to-use home and business networks that include everything from PCs to PDAs and digital cameras.

"UPnP is critical to the development of intelligent home and business networking as it allows smart devices, PCs, printers and other networked equipment to communicate automatically with each other," said Steve Makgil, vice president of software marketing for Virata. "UPnP can also enable devices to access a home or business gateway, allowing PDAs, for example, to use the gateway as a router for internet access, or cell-phones to use gateways to access a low-cost voice-over-DSL service."

"Smart devices that can easily connect deliver significant value to the user and UPnP is the best way to make devices easier to connect - regardless of the kind of wired or wireless media used within the home or small business network," said Mark Lee, lead product manager at Microsoft and the chairperson of the UPnP Forum Marketing Committee. "An increasing number of manufacturers use UPnP to make their smart devices 'connect-able' and simple to use, and these device companies depend upon embedded system tools to get their products to market. This is why Virata's new EmWeb UPnP software is an important new weapon in the development arsenal for these smart device vendors."

Makgill added, "Virata is the first vendor to offer a turnkey multi-platform UPnP software solution, which allows our customers to save significant development time and money in their efforts to introduce innovative UPnP-based products - something they currently can't find anywhere else. We are also delivering native UPnP support fully integrated in our Integrated Software on Silicon (ISOS) products, and we expect gateways based on ISOS to be key components in the newly intelligent networks that we are helping to
enable."

Based upon the highly efficient and proven EmWeb® architecture, EmWeb UPnP is part of Virata's standalone software product offerings and is bundled with other core EmWeb software components, including EmWebServer, EmWebClient, and EmWebXML (an XML parser), to further help system developers easily add cutting-edge network control to their products while saving design resources, utilising minimal memory and processor resources, and speeding the time to market for UPnP-enabled products. Available to
developers in June, EmWeb UPnP runs on the following embedded OS environments: OSE, VxWorks, Linux, ATMOS, ChorusOS, POSIX/Unix, among others. This UPnP functionality will also be made available as a fully integrated part of Virata's Release 8.1 of ISOS(tm). In addition, the small size of Virata's EmWeb UPnP solution makes it appropriate for embedded environments and its scalability allows it to be used in everything from cameras and printers, to network routers and switches.

Microsoft [NASDAQ: MSFT] is currently shipping Windows Me, the first operating system release to include UPnP control point support, which allows a PC user to see and control UPnP-enabled devices that are connected in a home or small business network. Windows XP, the new Microsoft operating system planned for release in the second half of 2001, will include expanded UPnP support and other home networking features, and is expected to be a major catalyst for broader consumer adoption of home networking. This signals a growing market opportunity for manufacturers of smart, connect-able devices and Virata's EmWeb UPnP software can help these manufacturers address this new opportunity.

"Virata's outstanding development efforts have led to the launch of a multi-platform embedded UPnP software resource that will help accelerate the adoption of UPnP architecture for pervasive peer-to-peer network connectivity of PCs of all form factors, intelligent appliances and wireless devices," added Salim AbiEzzi, chairperson of the UPnP Forum. "The release of EmWeb UPnP is a positive step to accelerate the continued emergence of UPnP-enabled devices."

About Virata's EmWeb Software
Virata's EmWeb embedded web management solutions deliver the software technology, development tools and design support necessary to help developers create innovative web-managed products. End users of these products can remotely monitor, configure, and manage devices or applications via the Internet using a standard web browser interface. A key benefit of EmWeb's unique, patented architecture is that it minimises the impact of web management on system resources.

The EmWeb product line offers a complete family of embedded web software solutions - including the newly announced EmWeb UPnP software:
· EmWeb Server: a highly efficient, standards compliant, fully scalable embedded HTTP/1.1 software server.
· EmWeb Client: fully compliant HTTP/1.1 caching client, enabling devices to engage in bi-directional communication.
· EmWeb XML: an extensible Markup Language (XML) Parser, which allows devices and applications to exchange XML data.
· EmWeb Options: Command-Line Interface (CLI) building tool, SNMP integration software, SSL integration software and GUI development tools.
