Dutch Greenery adopts messaging server technology to automate international produce operations

Slough, 8th May 2001— The Progress Company, a business unit of Progress Software Corporation
(NASDAQ: PRGS)and leading supplier of technology for building e-business today announced that The Greenery, The Netherlands’largest produce cooperative, has chosen the SonicMQ™ E-Business Messaging Server to unify its network of 7000 growers and 70 different transport organisations. With SonicMQ, The Greenery exchanges real-time information allowing it to move produce from greenhouses in The Netherlands to the United States markets in just 14 hours, reducing the delivery time for perishables by a full business day. Growers are able to control the rate of growth in their greenhouses and, with SonicMQ, The Greenery can now predict the arrival of produce to market
with 90 percent certainty. As a result, The Greenery is able to provide the freshest produce to
consumers, while also maintaining a steady price.

Over the past five years, The Greenery has rapidly grown into the largest producer and distributor of fruits and vegetables in The Netherlands. The Greenery also owns the transport companies to move its produce to market so that the company can quickly deliver the freshest fruits and vegetables to stores throughout Europe, the United States, Japan and North Africa.

“Standardising the technology among our growers, traders and transit companies would have been
impossible. SonicMQ will allow us to integrate the existing technology to easily and efficiently link these constituents together.” said Rene Santegoets, technical advisor for The Greenery.

“We continue to witness innovative and diverse uses of SonicMQ in industries that have
traditionally been
considered non-technical,” said Greg O’Connor, president of Sonic Software.

With an emphasis on leveraging technology to gain a competitive advantage in the international marketplace, The Greenery manages everything from the import, export, transport, logistics, sorting, grading, packing, to the cutting of local produce, and boasts the ability to move perishable items from Dutch vines to New England supermarkets in just 14 hours.
