New Products Move Company into OC-192, 10-Gigabit Ethernet Applications and Beyond


ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) today announced that it plans to introduce a family of advanced
devices based on silicon germanium (SiGe) to address the high-performance needs of networking
equipment manufacturers who are designing gear capable of OC-192, 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10-GbE) and
faster.

To handle the advanced performance requirements of OC-192 and 10-GbE networking speeds, ON
Semiconductor's GigaCommä family of SiGe devices will perform at 12 Gigabits per second (Gbps) - a
three fold increase above currently available offerings.

The company's current devices perform at 4 Gbps and are well suited for networking applications
with speeds up to OC-48. ON Semiconductor's broadband devices lead the industry for reliable
clocking functions critical to advanced networking applications. The company is an innovator in
technologies that maximise speed, yet reduce the jitter and skew often found in competitive
offerings.

By greatly reducing jitter and skew, ON Semiconductor's broadband devices enable the maximisation
of the available bandwidth. The company will introduce the first SiGe devices late in the second
quarter of 2001 with several additional devices introduced throughout the year.

SiGe is a silicon-based material that is an alternative technology to standard Complimentary Metal
Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS). By combining silicon (Si) with germanium (Ge), semiconductor
manufacturers are able to achieve the performance characteristics of gallium arsenide at a cost
that is more in line with CMOS technologies. Because SiGe is an extension of silicon, it has
ultra-low noise and distortion characteristics that are ideally suited for high-performance
circuits.

"When we emerge from the current economic downturn, OC-3 and OC-12 will be largely forgotten and
OC-48 and OC-192 will go to the forefront for the large network build outs that will follow," said
Jeremey Donovan, principal analyst with Gartner Dataquest, a leading technology research firm.
"This shift will accelerate the adoption of OC-768. The semiconductor vendors that will benefit
most from the transition are those that have migrated to non-silicon materials such as silicon
germanium."
