· Raidtec enables users to cost effectively build SANs using IP networks with Cisco Router

Raidtec Corporation, a leader in Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Storage Area Network (SAN) technologies, today announced successful completion of integration and compatibility testing of Raidtec’s FibreArray HI and FibreArray AA SAN storage systems with the Cisco SN 5420 Storage Router.

The Cisco SN 5420 Storage Router is a multi-interface platform that allows devices on IP networks to access pools of Fibre Channel storage through the use of iSCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface over IP). It works in conjunction with iSCSI drivers installed in host servers. From a TCP/IP network the router can forward the data to any storage device on the SAN network. Cisco promoted the development of iSCSI technology by licensing the source code for iSCSI compatible drivers for free to more than 25 companies. iSCSI works by encapsulating SCSI data traffic and transporting it over TCP/IP networks.

The FibreArray HI and FibreArray AA SAN storage systems are designed for entry level, mid range and No Single Point of Failure Enterprise SAN’s, scalable from 500GB to 17 Terabytes per Array.

"Raidtec and Cisco are working together to bring end-to-end storage networking solutions to the customer," said Mark Cree, General Manager of Cisco's Storage Router Business Unit. "The combination of Cisco's converged IP networks and Raidtec's storage products allow customers to rapidly deploy storage networking solutions that enable global access to information over the IP infrastructure and reduce the total cost of storage ownership through resource consolidation and management."

Raidtec and Cisco personnel successfully completed the interoperability test suite using the FibreArrayTM HI 12 and FibreArrayTM AA SAN system configurations, connected to Windows NT servers through the Cisco SN 5420 Storage Router. The Ethernet backbone used a 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch and Gigabit Ethernet NIC.

"Combining Raidtec's price/performance leadership in SAN storage with the Cisco SN 5420 Storage Router made immediate sense to us. It gives IT managers another dimension when considering how to solve the manageability of the exploding amount of data they have to manage and protect,” said Raidtec CEO Noel May.

He continued: "Due to the current economic downturn, IT managers are searching for more cost effective ways of storing and retrieving data that resides in their enterprise. We’d already begun to recognise the economic downturn as an advantage for Raidtec storage products due to our attractive price position but when coupled with the capability of utilizing already existing IP networks using Cisco's new router, the total price/performance proposition gets really interesting! This gives IP managers a new way to stretch their budgets and still respond to ever growing data storage needs. We are delighted to integrate the Cisco SN 5420 Storage Router into Raidtec’s technology strategy for customers who require an IP-based storage solution.”
