Award-winning ON Semiconductor engineer gives SPICE to designers Thursday 10 May 2001 PDF Print ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) today announced the publication of Christophe Basso's new book "Switch Mode Power Supply Spice Cookbook". The book, which is to be published through McGraw-Hill, provides ready-made SPICE power supply solutions to the some of most common and difficult problems facing power supply designers. The book is a complete designer's toolkit with tested, ready-to-run SPICE models on an accompanying CD-ROM. The models come in all three SPICE flavours with demo versions. Designers can start from scratch installing software and simulating the examples in the book with minimal or no SPICE experience. All the common SMPS topologies are covered: buck, boost, buck-boost, and SEPIC. Each is described in terms of relative strengths and weaknesses and then modelled. By using the CD, designers can select the required model in the flavour of SPICE needed, plug in their own specifications - and out comes a design solution. All the models in the book have been carefully simulated and tested. New models will be posted on a special website on a continuing basis. "I recognised that there was no easy way for designers to verify new designs. I wanted to give them access to templates that they could rely on as a valuable asset in the design process" said Basso. "It seemed to me that the best way to do this would be to take a lot of the experience I have amassed in the design of power supply systems and create a series of easy-to-use templates. This is exactly what the book does". The book comes on the heals of the announcement made by ON Semiconductor in April that it will host a series of European summer power supply seminars in association with Dr. Ray Ridley of Ridley Engineering. With the seminars ON Semiconductor is offering two days of application specific training to engineers designing power supply and power management sector. Christophe Basso will be presenting with Ray Ridley during these European seminars on the following dates: June 25-26, 2001 at The New Connaught Rooms - London, England July 4-5, 2001 at the Hilton Munich Park - Munich, Germany. Designers interested in more information on the seminar series should visit ON Semiconductor's website at http://onsemi.com/smps or contact firstname.lastname@example.org. About the author Christophe Basso, is Application Manager at ON Semiconductor in Toulouse, France. His field of expertise includes Switch-Mode Power Supplies in both the AC/DC and DC/DC areas within the Computer Internet Business as well as SPICE simulations which is the topic of Christophe's new book. Christophe is a well-known author in the electronics industry. Electronic Product News (EPN), a Reed Elsevier publication, awarded Christophe Basso first-prize in the '2000 Readers' Choice Awards' category 'Linear ICs', for his article "A new PFC technique reduces system cost", published in the July/August issue of EPN in 1999. About the book "Switch-Mode Power Supply Spice Cookbook" with CD-ROM is published by McGraw-Hill Professional Book Group, available in hardcover format, 320 pages, ISBN: 0071375090.
