Hampshire County Council As An ISP Deploys Web Filtering To 390 Schools In The Second Largest LEA

N2H2, the world’s largest supplier of Internet content filtering, has cemented its relationship with Hampshire County Council and provided all 390 schools in the region with an Internet filtering solution. At a local televised event held at Kings School, Winchester, Hampshire, pupils demonstrated the filtering software in action as they researched the web for information to complete their GCSE case study projects.

Managing Director for N2H2, UK and Europe, Peter Hodgson, comments, “It’s time to meet the challenge set by the UK Government and say that providing all our school children with safe surfing on the web is easy, quick and cost effective. An established, refined solution exists, and N2H2 is in a position to deploy this throughout the country in a matter of weeks.” He continues, “With in excess of 20 million users worldwide and some forty percent share of the educational arena in the US, N2H2 software offers the Internet’s most comprehensive and advanced categorisation and filtering system. Students surfing the web under N2H2’s software can be sure, and their parents too, that they stand the least chance of encountering inappropriate sites.” Hodgson urges local councils and the Government to ‘act now’ in solving this issue and take the lead from Hampshire County Council.

Mark Oaten, MP, adds, “Every parent worries about what their children can see on the Internet. This system gives them a guarantee that at school their children won’t be able to see pornography or inappropriate sites such as how to make a bomb or how to commit suicide.” He continues, “I congratulate the County and N2H2 Ltd for this initiative. It is a sensible way of dealing with this problem.”

Stuart Collier, Internet Services Manager, Hampshire County Council, explains, “The Internet offers a useful learning aid, but it can also be an uncontrolled source of information, much of which is inappropriate for kids. We needed to control Internet access at schools by the children. N2H2’s filtering software provides a flexible and extremely reliable solution that will help protect and educate our most precious resource – our children.”

Hodgson concludes, “In terms of the number of blocked and categorised URLs, N2H2 is superior to other vendors who claim to be in this space. N2H2 solutions deliver qualified identification and review of the blocked sites. For example, most N2H2 competitors can’t tell the difference between a pornographic site and one connected with breast cancer. N2H2’s philosophy is all about Internet productivity and safety for children, in fact for anyone using the Web in the office, school or at home.”

The N2H2 solution uses artificial intelligence and web spidering to identify and filter Web sites that are potentially counter-productive for the educational arena. These sites, of which N2H2 boasts over 50 million categorised URLs, are reviewed by a Human Review team to ensure correct segmentation into more than forty categories, and the service is updated on a daily basis.
