Pay-as-you-go web space purchase has become a reality with the launch of Pay-As-You-Host (, the user-controlled online facility where web designers pay only for the service they require and for the length of time they require it.

Pay-As-You-Host from Metronet is the UK’s first month-by-month hosting package, designed to provide a highly flexible and low-cost automated service. With a credit card transaction users purchase a basic package which includes file space, data transfer allowance, unlimited email accounts, mailing list and autoresponder features, plus database facilities and scripts. Automated user-control, for both individual and re-seller accounts, is achieved through two control panels, allowing 24 hour automated set-up and control.

The system’s flexibility means that users can specify the precise amount of file space allocated to each domain for web files, e-mails and logs. Pay-As-You-Host’s monitoring tools allow account details and site statistics to be viewed at any time. Additional capacity can be purchased online and all variables configured or re-configured immediately. Data transfer allocation is specified in order to avoid bandwidth problems, and this capacity rolls over from month to month so that it never expires unexpectedly; users pay only for the amount of data transfer used.

Pay-As-You-Host is ideal for web site builders who anticipate fluctuating growth in content and visitors and is particularly suitable for those who require varying amounts of capacity over different periods. Standard and re-seller accounts can be configured, in terms of space allocation and bandwidth, to the users’ specific requirements and can grow according to demand, rather than the ISP’s standard terms. Users are not tied to any aspect of the service and there are no annual contracts.
Continuation of the service or purchase of additional space or data transfer allowance is easy, quick and the facility is available 24 hours a day.

Standard features include unlimited mail forwarding, mailing lists, CGI, SSI and PHP scripts and mySQL database platform. Directories can be password protected, error pages customised and a special facility allows an entire web site to be backed up and e-mailed to a specified address. When credit on the system is running low, Pay-As-You-Host sends an automatic reminder two weeks, one week and one day before the service ceases. Logging on and crediting the account will immediately re-activate it. But Pay-As-You-Host customers are not totally reliant on automation. Metronet provides a 7-day-a-week telephone and email support service.

Paresh Morjaria, Metronet’s chief executive and the brains behind the new service said, “Our development of Pay-As-You-Host was in response to requests for short-term flexible web space hosting. We researched the project by going back over our support request e-mails for the previous two years. This showed us that one of the biggest issues was bandwidth. Other providers often fail to address this question, preferring to sign up users for a standard annual package and then adding costs when data transfer capacity exceeds expectations.

“We’re providing a truly WIYSIWYG service. There are lots of frills but you won’t find any hidden charges. For instance, we don’t charge for transferring domains to or from Pay-As-You-Host. Our users can see exactly what they are getting.

“This is a totally customer-focussed service where the risk of purchasing the wrong thing is almost impossible. We don’t want our users to find that they’ve paid up-front for megabytes of file space or bandwidth that they will never use. Yes, it’s web hosting - but not as we know it!”
