Global Directory Forum launched at EEMA 2001 in Paris Monday 21 May 2001 PDF Print The launch and first public meeting of a Global Directory Forum will take place in Paris on 11 June 2001 at ‘EEMA 2001’, the 14th Annual Conference hosted by EEMA, the European Forum for Electronic Business. The initiative was conceived jointly through EEMA’s Directory Interest Group and the The Open Group’s Directory Interoperability Forum (DIF), with a view to understanding and resolving the outstanding issues pertaining to the role of directory services within e-Business. “The prospect of organisations throughout the world having access to reliable, comprehensive, secure, and trustworthy directory services for business-to-business purposes has been a tantalizing but elusive goal for many years,” said David Goodman, CMO at Metamerge, as well as EEMA board member and chair of its Directory Interest Group. “For a number of reasons, both good and bad, Internet-based directory services have not yet become a reality. One of the objectives behind this Global Directory Forum will be to review the commercial barriers preventing the worldwide deployment of business-to-business enterprise directories, such as · role-based access controls · flexible naming models · data reliability · trusted transactions · lack of trans-national harmonisation on legal issues with the objective of proposing standards-based or de facto solutions to the roadblocks encountered,” he continued. The initiative brings together the complementary activities of both EEMA’s Directory Group and the DIF, which enables and promotes open and interoperable directories based on open standards, for the benefit of enterprises, service providers and application vendors. “We are very encouraged by the level of interest in this joint initiative, and the potential to bring together interested parties from all corners of the globe” said Winston Bumpus of Novell, Inc. and chair of The Open Group’s Directory Interoperability Forum. “The fact that the European Commission will be attending the first meeting is an indication of the importance placed on the furthering of directories within the area of e-Commerce on a European and worldwide scale.” Parties interested attending the inaugual meeting of the Global Directory Forum in Paris on 11th June should visit the EEMA Annual Conference pages at www.eema.org or contact EEMA on +44 1386 793028 for more information.
