IBM PROVIDES ALL-WIRELESS MOBILE PRODUCT OFFERING Tuesday 22 May 2001 PDF Print ThinkPad Wireless Integration With the introduction of new ThinkPad A22m models, IBM takes the next step in its initiative to extend wireless capability across the ThinkPad lineup with notebooks that can connect over a modem, Ethernet or wireless 802.11b LAN. IBM's innovative dual antenna design, which places the antenna in the top cover, provides significantly better signal strength (1) than that offered by other notebooks (2). The ThinkPad A22m comes with a 14.1-inch TFT display and Intel 1GHz(3) processor. IBM also announced another desktop alternative model, the ThinkPad A22e, a 2.6kg(4) (travel weight) notebook with either a 13.3-inch or a 14.4 display. These lightweight notebooks are targeted at budget-conscious businesses that require the essentials for mobile computing. IBM has enhanced its ThinkPad i Series line with new models offering integrated wireless and CD/RW capability. These notebooks, with a 13.3-inch TFT displays, feature advanced graphics and DVD functionality, and offer an affordable notebook solution for growing businesses, educational institutions, students and individuals. Designed for mobility, the ThinkPad i Series 1200 and 1300 line starts at 2.7kg and 3.6cm thin, with longer-lasting batteries on most models. Earlier this year, IBM introduced the industry's first Intel-based notebook with integrated wireless LAN capabilities, the ThinkPad i Series 1300. New IBM WorkPads Two new sleek and slim IBM WorkPads, including IBM's first handheld computer with a color display, are now ready for customer delivery. Based on the Palm Computing platform, the new WorkPads feature the industry-leading Palm OS software v4.0 bundled with enterprise-ready software from IBM, including Lotus EasySync Pro and IBM DB2 Everywhere Personal Edition. The WorkPad c500 and c505 PC Companions offer the tiny Secure Digital (SD) / MultiMediaCard expansion slot for expandability and additional functionality, yet are highly portable, weighing only 113 and 139 grams respectively. Educational Offerings IBM wireless solutions are popular in higher education, with more than 160 universities enrolled in the ThinkPad University programme, an integrated solution to deploy and support student and faculty mobile computing. Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland, last October invested nearly £500,000 in IBM ThinkPad laptop computers and loaned them to 350 first-year students in the business school. The students paid a £75 deposit for a ThinkPad A Series, which comes with a 6Gb hard disk, a modem, an Ethernet card and 8Mb radio cards with Lucent 802.11 for wireless connection.
