New appointments reflect customer focus, and significance of US and Asian Pacific regions for
worldwide ADSL chipset leader

Brussels, Belgium, May 22 2001 - Alcatel (NYSE: ALA) today announced new senior level sales
appointments for its microelectronics activities in Asia Pacific and North America. These new
positions are also complemented by a recent addition to the executive sales team for EMEA.
Reinforcing the worldwide sales organisation ensures that customer focus remains top
priority, and continues to drive product design.

"We are committed to build a world class sales and customer service organisation, in-line
with sales and our position as a major global player," says Christian Olivier, Vice President
of Worldwide Sales. "The new appointments reflect the significance of these regions in terms
of their contribution to our global business strategy, and the demand for semiconductor
technologies in these markets.

Vick Aggarwala joins Alcatel as Vice President of Sales in Asia Pacific, based in the
Singapore office. Vick brings 26 years of international experience in the electronics
industry, and was previously with Future Electronics, the third largest electronic component
Distribution company worldwide, where he was a pioneer of Future Electronics' Asia Pacific
Operations. His appointment follows two additional office openings in Korea and Japan during
recent months.

The North American Sales team is also being strengthened with Mark Rice's appointment as Vice
President of North American Sales. Mark, who is based in Richardson, was previously with
Rockwell and Conexant, where he directed key accounts such as Compaq, Dell and HP. He brings
23 years of experience in Customer Service, Purchasing, Sales, Key Account and Strategic
Sales Management. This appointment is complemented by the expansion of sales and technical
