New Fujitsu Quad AFE for ADSL Central Office applications Tuesday 22 May 2001 PDF Print May 22nd 2001. Fujitsu Microelectronics’ MB86628 KeyWave II Quad Analogue Front End (AFE) for ADSL modems is the ideal solution for high density, power sensitive Central Office (CO) equipment. Already designed into Quad and Octal ADSL modems and supporting various DSL modes, the Fujitsu Quad AFE offers flexibility in design for CO applications. Demand for increased subscriber capacity from a CO DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) is driving the requirement for more DSL ports per line card. Board area and power consumption per port is therefore at a premium. The KeyWaveTM II Quad AFE has four complete ADSL AFE channels integrated into a single, compact EFBGA package. Two Quad AFEs interfaced with an octal DSL transceiver can realise a board area of < 1.5 square inches per port (including line drivers and protection circuitry). Power consumption is dominated by the transmit line driver in each ADSL port. The Fujitsu Quad AFE contributes only 235 mW per channel to the overall power budget when running full-rate ADSL. The KeyWaveTM II Quad AFE has the highest resolution analogue to digital (ADC) and digital to analogue converters (DAC) in the industry. In each AFE channel, 15-bit ADCs and DACs with high linearity ensure accurate conversion of the ADSL DMT signal, and allow for maximum data rates on the line. Near-end cross talk (NEXT) is a limitation of all CO ADSL systems. With multiple AFE channels on a single chip, internal crosstalk becomes a potential performance limitation for the system. The Fujitsu Quad AFE boasts very low crosstalk (< -100 dB) so that NEXT is only line dependent. Excellent low noise performance through the receive path is achieved with a unique input architecture in the KeyWaveTM II Quad AFE. No additional receive path amplification is required either in the form of an amplifier or as an active hybrid interface. The line driver is the only additional active component required for connection to the line. Fabrication using Fujitsu’s renowned 0.35 Triple Well process technology maximises isolation of digital and analogue sections. Priced at $21 each in quantities of 10, 000, the MB86628 KeyWave II Quad AFE is the latest offering from the family of Fujitsu ADSL products and is part of Fujitsu’s on going commitment to leading-edge developments in DSL technology.
