Data Storage Group Launches

30 May 2001 - The Data Storage Group (DSG) at Hitachi today launches a new initiative designed to prevent critical data loss for SME and home computer users. The Infobak initiative includes a web-based storage solution, an industry first data recovery warranty and a dedicated website (, which will provide advice and information regarding data back-up and storage.

The Infobak web-based back-up provides SMEs, home PC and consumer technology users with an automated, secure and cost effective data storage solution to prevent critical data loss caused by theft, operator error, component failure, virus and malicious attacks.

The data recovery warranty insures the cost of physical data recovery from the hard disk drive. A typical data recovery operation not covered by the Infobak warranty could cost around $5k. The warranty is the first of its kind to cover data stored on the hard disk drive.

IDC estimates that 53 per cent of a firm's intellectual capital is "remote", residing in personal computers, PDAs and other appliances. The consumer electronics market is beginning to mirror this dependence on hard disks with the rise in high-density files created by digital video and audio applications such as cameras and MP3 players.

Infobak is available via a range of channels, including online registration at Infobak certificates will be added to the PC and laptop products sold via Hitachi's OEM partnerships and channel. A boxed version of the software is to be sold in home and business computing retail outlets from July.

Mac Motraghi, Hitachi DSG, Infobak Product Marketing Manager said, "Although most personal computer users know the importance of backing up their data, this vital discipline is often overlooked. Only when users experience a major system failure do they fully recognise the value of their data. Infobak is a comprehensive data storage solution that can prevent and cure data loss for people using computers in the home, office or studio. There is now no excuse not to make regular back-ups"

The Infobak website and centre of excellence is launched today. The dedicated site ( will contain advice and resources in four languages (English, French, Italian and German) to help end users improve their storage and data protection strategy.

Hitachi DSG has created partnerships with a number of leading IT service providers to launch Infobak, including the Dutch insurance company UGS and PC-OP, the UK based storage service provider (SSP). Vogon International will provide the hard disk data recovery service and NovaStor Corporation the connecting software.

All customers with Infobak registered products are entitled to a free-trial period of 90 days. Capacity during the trial periods is limited to 500Mb. When registered to Infobak, customers can grow their storage capacity by 500Mb blocks on demand, with no upper limit, making it a viable data storage solution for medium sized companies.

Dr. Alrick Smith, chief executive of PC-OP.COM comments; "Many organisations do not realise the effect that data loss can have on their business and are often too busy to think ahead about storage and data protection. The combined package with Hitachi DSG means that data back-up begins at source."

Edwin de Groot, Director of UGS, the insurance company behind the venture, said: "The portable nature of personal computers means that it is often very expensive to gain insurance for the hardware and virtually impossible to gain warranty for the data. The Infobak product covers both sides and will save businesses the cost and time of data recovery when data loss occurs."

Infobak comprises three elements:

Unlimited Web Based Storage

Infobak provides computer users with web-based storage capacity. Users can create a private and secure storage area on the Web to copy and back-up their files. The online storage can be accessed at any time, making Infobak particularly attractive to mobile workers.

Centre of Excellence

The centre of excellence will provide information and advice to users and companies embarking on a new back-up strategy. Data protection experts, storage providers and industry commentators will provide the site content. The centre of excellence can be found at

Data Recovery Warranty

In addition to the manufacturers warranty Infobak provides a data recovery for certified Infobak customers. In the event of a disk failure, Hitachi will attempt to recover the data at its approved data recovery partner, providing regular back-ups have been made.

"Vogon International have been providing high quality and effective data recovery services for over 16 years and have developed a world-wide reputation for achieving success," said Gordon Stevenson, managing director, Vogon International. "The Infobak solution offers not only the chance for people to protect their data but the knowledge that if all else fails they can fall back on the technical expertise of Vogon."

A twelve-month subscription to Infobak will cost EURO99.99, including access to the site, 500Mb of online storage capacity and the data recovery warranty. Storage capacity can be increased by the customer in 500Mb blocks at a cost of EURO29.99 per twelve-month period.

Adds Motraghi, "As a leading provider of 2.5" hard disk drives to laptop manufacturers we are taking the lead in encouraging end users to recognise that far from being 'just another component', hard disk drives are crucial 'information banks'. We are giving the user the practical advice and the physical data storage offered by PC-OP, to help solve the problem of data loss that costs businesses and end users millions of pounds a year.'

The Hitachi 2.5-inch HDD family, now in its 12th generation, includes three models, ranging in capacity from 7.5 GB to 30 GB of formatted capacity - among the highest levels in the industry.
