High Wycombe, 30th May 2001 – Just weeks after MATERNA announced the launch of its “made for mobile” SMS Soap, BBC One is celebrating the phenomenon of text messaging in a special night of themed programming ‘The Joy of Text’. It will be broadcast on Saturday 9th June 2001. ‘The Joy of Text’ includes a 45 minute documentary about the ways in which text messaging impacts people’s lives and a live entertainment show with the audience participating in text messaging quizzes fronted by Ulrika Johnsson.

Viewers will be encouraged to participate by sending in text messages to the programme. A text evening on this scale is a first for the UK and a large response is expected. The BBC will be collecting thousands of messages from viewers throughout the evening and making them available to the programme editors for analysis. The best jokes, emoticons and art will be selected and displayed on plasma screens on stage.

Michael Ohajuru, Sales and Marketing Director at MATERNA explains: “There is a real cross over between light entertainment and the mobile world. The SMS Soap, already gaining momentum in Germany, will be coming to a mobile near you in the Autumn and this evening of light entertainment pays testament to the importance of texting in Britain today.”
