Cable & Wireless IDC, Cable & Wireless' business in Japan, today (31st May 2001) announced
the opening of its Tokyo Internet Solutions Centre (Tokyo ISC) in Ariake, Tokyo. This is
Cable & Wireless IDC's fifth data centre in Japan and follows the recent opening of its
second Osaka hosting centre on April 9, 2001.
The new data centre, which has a capacity of approximately 13,000 square meters of hosting
space is connected directly to the 1.2 Gbps Internet backbone operating between Japan and the
United States. The completion of the new centre brings the company's total hosting space in
Japan to approx. 20,000 square meters.
Cable & Wireless IDC has been engaged in operating and managing Internet data centres in
Japan for four years. The existing data centres have already had more than 4,000 servers
installed and handle around 4TB (terabyte) of data per day.
Following on from the opening of the Santa Clara (California) hosting centre on April 18,
2001, Tokyo ISC is the 23rd data centre to be operated by Cable & Wireless worldwide. The
first ISC in the UK was opened at Swindon, in July 2000. The opening of this new facility in
Tokyo is integral to supporting the group's strategy to strengthen its position as a leading
provider of leading-edge web hosting solutions on a global scale. The Tokyo ISC is also
expected to perform as a hub for providing web hosting services in the Asia Pacific region.
Like other Cable & Wireless' data centres, it is connected directly to Cable & Wireless' high
performance global IP network.
"The opening of the new Tokyo ISC marks a major step towards achieving one of Cable &
Wireless' objectives to be a global leader in the web hosting market," said Don Reed,
Executive Director of Cable and Wireless plc and Chief Executive of Cable & Wireless Global
Services. "We are very pleased to provide Japanese customers with our sophisticated web
hosting services at this state-of-the-art facility in Tokyo,"
Cable & Wireless' new Managed Hosting Solutions offerings, which are available in the US and
UK, will be available in Japan by mid summer 2001 and will be provided within the Tokyo ISC.
