RC8500 Provides Cost-Effective, Highly Versatile, ATM-Based Platform That Supports Multiple Subscriber Connections and QoS for Data, Voice and Video

RC Networks, Inc.™, a leading provider of in-building broadband access equipment, today introduced a new family of ATM-based access concentrators that feature ADSL and G.SHDSL subscriber interfaces. An ideal solution for residential and business customers, the RC8500 enables carriers and service providers to support multiple high-speed DSL connections with one economical and highly flexible platform. RC Networks will showcase the RC8500 products at SUPERCOMM 2001 in Atlanta, USA June 5-7.

The RC8500 ATM Access Concentrator family’s unique architecture provides multiple types of DSL services through an integrated routing, bridging and switching platform that features ADSL and G.SHDSL subscriber ports. It also supports a full range of network backbone and WAN connections such as T1/E1 IMA, DS-3 ATM, OC-3/STM-1 and 10/100Base-T. With support for ATM quality of service (QoS), the RC8500 enables service providers to offer multiple differentiated services such as high-speed data, voice and video to meet the growing demand for these services by more subscribers. Since it uses existing copper wiring, the RC8500 allows service providers to deploy broadband access easily and economically, which greatly reduces their capital expense and time to market.

“The RC8500’s ATM-based platform gives service providers standards-based technologies that enable them to meet their customers’ requirements for higher connection speeds and greater reach,” said Seton Kasmir, founder, chairman and chief technology officer of RC Networks. “RC Networks’ continues to drive the deployment of DSL with the development of the versatile RC8500 family which provides excellent opportunities for service providers to expand into new residential and business-focused markets.”

Superior Flexibility For Maximum Coverage

The RC8500 product family, with 8, 16, 24 and 48-port models, is designed for maximum scalability, high port-density and highly reliable performance. It’s compatible with a broad range of customer premise equipment (CPE), which allows service providers to select from multiple devices based on price and functionality for low end-to-end installation cost. The RC8500 will be available July 2001 with pricing based on configuration.

“Service providers are looking for ways to provision DSL services quickly, easily and without huge capital expenditures in order to realise a faster return on their investment,” said Patrick Hurley, analyst with TeleChoice, Inc., a leading strategic consulting firm for the telecom industry. “Solutions like RC Networks’ new in-building solution are well positioned to enable service providers to rapidly provision and roll out new services that will help them stay competitive in both the residential and business markets.”

Leveraging its versatility, the RC8500 simplifies broadband wireless applications using RC Networks’ LongReachä Ethernet product. The ATM-based access concentrator in a building basement can be connected to a wireless radio on the rooftop over existing in-building wiring using the LongReach Ethernet technology. This patented technology extends the reach of the Ethernet signals up to eight times more than the typical reach of about 300 feet and eliminates the need for costly additional equipment.

According to new statistics published by TeleChoice, the U.S. DSL market had nearly 3 million lines in service at the end of the first quarter of this year. Overall, the installed base grew by 20 percent during the quarter.

In another report, U.S-based International Data Corp. predicts that the European Internet access market will continue to grow 30 percent annually between 2000 and 2005, fuelled in part by the emergence of broadband access technologies.
