RC Networks, Inc.™, a leading provider of in-building broadband access equipment, today announced that it has selected Agere Systems’ (NYSE: AGR.A) ATM port controller (APC) for its new RC8500 family of in-building ATM-based access concentrators. RC Networks’ product line is designed to meet the demanding performance and cost objectives of the rapidly growing broadband access markets. Agere Systems will exhibit this technology in Booth 3947 at SUPERCOMM 2001 in Atlanta, Ga. this week.

RC Networks made its decision after reviewing the products of several semiconductor vendors. It selected Agere Systems’ APC because of its flexibility, performance and ability to meet RC Networks’ stringent product requirements.

“One of the key advantages of Agere Systems’ APC is the scheduling system employed in the design which provides considerable flexibility in achieving our Quality of Service (QoS) and throughput requirements,” said Seton Kasmir, founder, chairman and chief technology officer of RC Networks.

“We’re pleased that RC Networks has chosen our current port card and switching solution for its new RC8500 product family,” said Jim Sepko, segment marketing manager, Agere Systems. “Our APC has achieved wide acceptance in various markets due to its extensive feature set and performance. It’s the only single-chip solution that provides this wide-ranging feature set at full-duplex 622 Mbits/s.”

Two aspects of Agere Systems’ APC design are its scheduling and buffer management systems. They feature multiple schedulers of various types, which are optimised for the requirements of specific traffic classes. The APC also uses advanced buffer management algorithms to maximise the number of calls admitted for a given buffer space.

RC Networks’ RC8500 ATM Access Concentrator family is an in-building, ATM-based platform that supports QoS for high-speed data, voice and video connections. The RC8500 features full rate ADSL and G.SHDSL models – each with up to 48 ports – that provide superior flexibility, time-to-installation and affordability for the multi-dwelling unit (MDU), multi-tenant unit (MTU) and hospitality markets.
