- Voice XML Gateway to Bring Speech Technologies to New Applications

SRC has installed a VXML platform that will provide third parties with the first Europe-based applications hosting environment.

Building more efficient, speech based systems will allow companies to provide real-time information to their customers, whilst reducing the need for live operators to deal with routine or high volume call types. Human resources can then be allocated more efficiently, concentrating on more complex or higher value activities.
Speech-enabled call centre applications give companies significant returns on their investments. It is estimated that integrating speech recognition technology into applications can provide a payback within 6-12 months in those call centres that maintain more than 50 live operators. With the advent of SRC’s applications hosting services, an increasing number of call centres will be able to take advantage of dramatic operational savings without major upfront investment in new platforms and applications development.
VXML (Voice eXtensible Mark-up Language) is a high level programming language for developing speech recognition based applications allowing voice dialogues to be specified. The VoiceXML Forum developed the dialogue language VoiceXML 1.0, which it submitted to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Voice Browser Working Group. The W3C Voice Browser Working Group used those specifications as a model for the Dialog Markup Language. The W3C Voice Browser Working Group has augmented the Dialog Markup Language with the Speech Recognition Grammar Markup Language and the Speech Synthesis Markup Language. However, “VXML” is the term that is being used widely in the industry to describe all these elements.
VXML is now being used extensively for telephony-based speech recognition applications and for voice-enabled web applications. VXML offers a number of advantages over other mark up languages, such as HTML. HTML was designed as a visual language with emphasis on visual layout and appearance. Voice interfaces are much more dialogue oriented, with emphasis on verbal presentation and response. Rather than bloating HTML with additional features and elements, VXML was specifically designed to support speech dialogues. Version 2.0 of VoiceXML is currently being finalised and should be available towards the end of the year.
