The Halifax Selects Walker’s End-to-End e-procurement Solution

Following an Extensive Review of the Marketplace Halifax Offices to Use Walker’s e-procurement Solution for New High Efficiency, Cost-Effective Purchasing Processes

Walker Interactive Systems, Inc. (OTCBB: WALK), a global provider of e-business solutions for the enterprise, after an extensive review of the competitive e-procurement marketplace has announced that the Halifax, one of the UK’s leading banks and financial services companies, is the first customer in the EMEA region to have invested in Walker’s e-procurement software and associated services. The investment was made to assist the Halifax in moving to e-procurement and collaborative commerce as a business practice. The system will utilise a combination of technologies to address the Halifax’s business requirements. The main e-transaction processing will reside on IBM’s S/390 e-server, the Halifax procurement catalogue and Walker’s collaborative commerce “portlets” will be deployed on Application Servers through IBM’s Websphere Server architecture and will access Walker’s Deep e-business solution through its e-technology layer. The Application Servers will be hosted by Wal!
ker’s ASP Division.

After a complete assessment of e-procurement solutions in the marketplace, Walker was asked to prove its end-to-end e-procurement solution by satisfying the Halifax’s complex needs through a pilot phase. After demonstrating complete adherence to all of the pilot’s specifications, Walker was selected because its e-procurement solution best supports the Halifax business requirements.

Walker was able to meet the timetable for Halifax and demonstrate a very fast Return-on-Investment (ROI). In addition, the Halifax places a great deal of emphasis on strategic business partners and collaborative work in supporting its future and there is a long and strong business relationship between the two organisations.

“The Halifax Group has a large number of businesses including Halifax Bank, Halifax Property Services, Bank One, Clerical Medical, Birmingham Midshires, Intelligent Finance, and St James’ Place Capital plc. Across all these businesses there are, consequently, a large number of suppliers. We now have an active policy to reduce the number of suppliers we do business with so that we can achieve cost savings,” said Ian Taylor, Head of Procurement at Halifax Group headquarters.

“The business goals for the e-procurement project are to have one group-wide procurement website from which we anticipate significant cost reductions through focusing on fewer suppliers and an improved ability to negotiate with them. At the same time, our employees will receive deliveries of supplies far more quickly and efficiently than before,” he added.

Taylor continued, “Our business objectives to streamline processes and reduce costs are clear, and the Walker e-procurement solutions will allow us to achieve these by reviewing our suppliers thoroughly and effectively. We plan to rationalise our suppliers while negotiating better deals with suppliers who will become our core business partners,” he concluded.

“Strong business relationships are important to the success of the Halifax and we place significant importance on proven partnerships and working in close collaboration. The Halifax and Walker have been business partners since 1992, as users of Walkers Financial software and Walkers Horizon Analytics software. This has been a major factor in our choice of partner,” said Des Quigley, e-Procurement Consultant at Halifax Group.

Roger Llewellyn, UK Managing Director at Walker said, “After an extremely thorough review of the e-procurement market and a demanding pilot approach, Walker is delighted that the Halifax has decided that Walker’s e-procurement solution is the way forward for their business. The Halifax is a major player in the market, dedicated to enhanced ways of working such as e-procurement. We are proud to have the Halifax as our first customer for the EMEA region in this pioneering field of collaborative commerce. The Halifax choice is a strong testament to our solutions and their power in streamlining procurement and making the enterprise more cost-effective.”
