7 June 2001, Basingstoke, UK and Newark, CA - iOra (, supplier of solutions for managing mobile content, has successfully completed trials of its Mobile Intranet software over the Orange High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) wireless network in the UK. HSCSD has been pioneered in the UK by mobile network supplier Orange, and offers a 28.8 kbps wireless data connection. iOra’s Mobile Intranet maintains Intranet content on laptops, giving offline access with high-speed updates. As a result laptop users need to dial-in less frequently, and automatically receive updates in a fraction of the time it would take to download new files. During the trials, this resulted in a 20-fold reduction in download times and 20-fold cost saving on the HSCSD service costs.

Martin Wood, Senior Product Manager – Mobile Data Access at Orange commented, "HSCSD is aimed at the corporate data market, where mobile access to corporate data is critical. iOra Mobile Intranet is an exciting solution – it maximizes the potential of available bandwidth."

Paddy Falls, CEO and co-founder of iOra commented, "Being members of the Orange Developers’ Forum has enabled us to work closely with Orange on wireless data access. HSCSD provides a significantly better service for the mobile workforce, with bandwidth up to 28.8 kbps. For low-volume email, services such as HSCSD and GPRS will prove adequate, but cost and bandwidth are significant obstacles for corporate adoption where access to larger volumes of business critical information is required. Businesses are

finding that they need solutions like iOra Mobile Intranet that exploit the available bandwidth, reduce the cost, and that can deliver and manage corporate content on mobile devices."

According to recent research conducted by Arthur Andersen, 66% of organizations currently use laptops for remote access to corporate content, but cited lack of bandwidth, poor reliability of service, and security concerns as key constraints for successful use of mobile data. The report comments that "Most organizations are seeking to achieve cost savings through quick and convenient access to corporate information", and calls for "a partnership approach between business end users, IT departments, network operators, software vendors and consultants – to enable a clearer picture of how to unlock the value of mobile data."

iOra Mobile Intranet addresses the problems outlined by providing secure, offline access to corporate content, with high-speed synchronization optimized for low-bandwidth connections. Resulting benefits are improved management and security of information for the mobile workforce.
