Nationwide Building Society is to broadcast next month's annual general meeting (AGM) live over the internet.

It is the second time that the UK's largest building society has "webcasted" its AGM. About 500 computer users viewed last year's event live, with a similar number watching the recorded version afterwards.

The AGM is being held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, Lancaster Terrace, London, on Thursday 19 July (starting 11am).

Once again, internet users who are unable to attend will be able to watch the AGM live via the Nationwide website at Alternatively, it will be recorded and archived for viewing on the website*.

Stuart Bernau, Nationwide's marketing and commercial director, said: "Around 10 million people - or one in four of the adult population - have a financial relationship with Nationwide. We wish to make our AGM as accessible to our members as possible, including to those unable to attend.

"A growing number of people have access to the internet. In the last year alone, the number of those registered to use our internet banking service has trebled to in excess of 700,000."

Notes to editors:

PC and Mac users will need either Real Player version 8 or Windows Media Player 6.4 installed on their machines.

Free versions can be downloaded from the Nationwide website ( from 18 June. Users are being advised to do this before the AGM begins.
