PRESS ASSOCIATION BUILDS A BIGGER PICTURE WITH PIXOLOGY Tuesday 12 June 2001 PDF Print Around 5 million photographic images spanning 100 years of history are shortly to be made available as custom selected website content, following the formation of a new partnership between the Press Association’s photo library, PA Photos, and digital imaging and internet printing specialist Pixology. The new three year exclusive deal has been created to provide photo content for a range of consumer ‘Gallery Printing’ and print-on-demand services via the internet, which allows consumers to order their favourite images from a library specially created from PA Photos’ vast photo archive. Already Pixology and PA Photos are in the process of developing specific web content packages for MSN.co.uk and BT and are in discussion with a number of the UK’s major ISP’s and portals. The service is being considered on a global basis for use by visitors to web-sites around the world and as Pixology has already pioneered the technology with News International, the company is confident of the success of this new venture. “This is a superb partnership and a tremendous opportunity,” said Pixology’s CEO, Yuval Yashiv. “PA Photos possess the images, media knowledge and the expertise in great photography with access to high profile events, due to their extensive contacts and links with other organisations, whilst Pixology has the ability, systems and technology to deliver the service effectively.” The service will allow Pixology’s customers to add a branded photo gallery website service to their consumers, who can select an image, choose a format or size and then order a print, poster or even apply that image to any of a range of items such as mouse-mats, mugs and t-shirts, for example. Pixology’s service provides ISPs and internet based businesses with a true commercial advantage in being able to add further content depth to their on-line business, but most importantly, creates and incremental revenue stream This print-on-demand service is already in use with News International’s page3.com website, which is centred on images of The Sun newspaper’s famous page 3 girls. Yashiv added: “Mass customisation is a trend that is being experienced globally, where individuals are choosing to reinforce their individuality in a number of ways and one of these is in their choice of imagery and where it is applied. People’s desire to be different or have something ‘new’ is the principle behind print-on-demand, which has proven to be highly successful.” With the PA Photos / Pixology venture, PA Photos will utilise their expertise in selecting a ‘custom gallery’ of images specifically that will appeal to visitors to Pixology’s partners’ web-sites – such as celebrities, popular music artists, news events and sports. In addition, within hours of an event being captured on camera, the images will be made available for consumers to purchase. The entire system structure means there is no risk of copyright infringement or pictures being downloaded by individuals for their own personal distribution or other illegal use. The whole process is highly controlled to avoid mass piracy – from taking the original photo through to storage, selection, printing and delivery – which allows Pixology and PA Photos to provide a secure turn-key solution. Milica Timotic, Head of PA Photos, explained: “Every day, PA photographs the events which make the news. Up until now, these pictures have been only accessible to the media but with Pixology, this material will be available to the public. With a wide coverage of events and exciting photography, we are sure that there will be something for everyone.” - ends - About Pixology: Pixology is a software company that provides digital imaging solutions, in particular in the area of digital cameras.
