United Business Media International 'Bets the Server Farm' on Citrix Wednesday 13 June 2001 PDF Print Leading publishing and events company standardises on Citrix application serving 13 June 2001 - Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CTXS) today announced that United Business Media international (UBMI), a leading publishing and events company, has implemented Citrix® MetaFrameTM 1.8 application serving software to provide enterprise-wide application access to 1,300 users. The Citrix implementation is part of UBMI's strategic initiative to create a scalable IT infrastructure that also allows centralised IT management. UBMI uses Citrix MetaFrame software running on Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0, TSE servers to provide easy access to business-critical applications, including Oracle Financials, ESOP (Exhibition Sales Order Processing), Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office 2000. These applications are centrally managed on Citrix MetaFrame servers and deployed over a WAN to employees in seven locations in the UK and the Netherlands, enabling UBMI to reap the benefits of Citrix's advanced management capabilities while extending the reach of its applications to more users. "Having experienced IT integration challenges as a result of acquisitions, it was essential that we could standardise the applications being used across the company and regain manageability," said Andrew Booth, IT Support Director, UBMI. "Additionally, it was important that we could ensure scalability, as we bring new employees on board, and decrease application deployment time - allowing us to keep up with the rapid changes in the business services industry." UBMI has seen significant cost savings from the implementation both in terms of IT support and hardware costs. The company can now roll out inexpensive thin clients rather than fully functional PCs and IT staff can also deploy new applications and upgrades to all employees from a single point on the central server farm, avoiding the time traditionally spent visiting each desktop. In addition, UBMI has simplified its user support by implementing a first-line service desk, which takes advantage of the centralised access and session shadowing capabilities enabled by Citrix MetaFrame, allowing support staff to 'take over' a user's screen from a central location. This removes the need to travel to employee sites for support purposes, bringing further time and cost savings. "UBMI's decision to standardise its application deployment enterprise-wide using Citrix MetaFrame demonstrates that leading companies are recognising the value of centralising their IT infrastructures with application server computing," commented Jane Rimmer, Marketing Director, Citrix Systems. "By improving application access and management, UBMI's implementation of Citrix MetaFrame will contribute to higher productivity, user satisfaction and IT efficiency."
