Virata's ISOS helps broadband equipment manufacturers develop
and introduce innovative broadband products

Virata® Corporation [Nasdaq: VRTA] today announced that it has released the next generation of its best-selling integrated software-on-silicon (ISOS) platform, which enables Virata's customers to significantly increase the communications processing power for their broadband products.

The integration of advanced features such as auto-configuration, security and traffic management into ISOS 8.0 also enables Virata customers to add new, innovative and value-enhancing features into their own products during the development process.

Virata has invested the efforts of nearly 250 engineers worldwide to create ISOS. As a result, ISOS is one of the most comprehensive software suites available today and has been deployed in more than six million broadband wireline (e.g. DSL) and wireless installations.

Available now, ISOS 8.0 incorporates the following new features: DSL Forum and OpenDSL auto-configuration guidelines and specifications; Web-based configuration and management; Frame Relay including Frame Relay to ATM internetworking support; expanded MIBs (Management Information Bases); SNMP v2 and v3; as well as Traffic Management features such as EPD (Early Packet Discard) and PPD (Partial Packet Discard).

Virata intends to extend future versions of ISOS into new areas of communications processing, including additional security (i.e., firewall support); native real-time IP capability (i.e.,MPLS and other advanced routing functions); and software drivers for HomePNA and HomeRF.

"ISOS is the software platform which enables our customers to differentiate their products in exciting and innovative ways," said Steve Makgill, vice president of software product management at Virata.

Our ISOS platform - which provides a full suite of broadband service capabilities in a pre-integrated hardware and software package - enables customers to cut their development time in half for first designs; and with a second design, the customer can once again slash development times by more than half. This is crucial to achieving shortest time-to-revenue for broadband devices and is one of the reasons Virata's ISOS platform is the core technology found in most of the world's DSL deployments today.”

He concluded “The addition of pre-integrated web management, along with support for industry standard auto-provisioning, makes ISOS even more useful to system developers by providing advanced functionality for a broad base of applications."

About Virata's ISOS Platform

Virata's ISOS is the common element among all of Virata's industry leading communications processors. The field-proven and richly featured ISOS networking and applications software suite enables Virata's customers to reduce first time design cycles.

In addition the fact that ISOS extends across Virata's entire communications processor family makes the savings even more dramatic for subsequent product generations. The structured nature of ISOS allows Virata customers to take their newly created value-added software into additional product designs without having to repeat software engineering efforts.

The unique ISOS product line, which uses Virata's ISOS software, consists of the following: Azuriteä, Virata's pre-integrated voice-over-DSL solution; Aluminum(tm), Virata's symmetric DSL family; Berylliumä, a communications processor integrated with an ADSL PHY; Heliumä, the low-cost, PHY-neutral communications processor family; Lithiumä, a low-cost, PHY-neutral communications processor for PCI applications; and Magnesiumä, the industry's first ISOS voice processing product. With more than 250 licenses of these technologies, Virata is a market leader for integrated broadband silicon platforms.

About Virata

Virata provides communications software and semiconductors to manufacturers of DSL, wireless, satellite, and other broadband networking equipment. Virata's suite of processor-independent software products provide developers with complete, field-proven implementations of networking functions, including MPLS and web servers, removing the need to write and validate new software code.

Virata also pre-integrates its extensive suite of communications software with its powerful and cost-effective communications processors to create ISOS products. These ISOS solutions assist customers in developing a diverse range of broadband wireless and wireline equipment including DSL modems, gateways, routers, and integrated access devices targeted at the voice and high-speed data network access and customer premises markets. Virata's products also help equipment manufacturers to simplify product development, reduce the time it takes for products to reach the market and focus resources on product differentiation and improvement.

Virata is a principal member of the ATM Forum, Bluetooth SIG organization, the DSL Forum, HomePNA, ITU, MPLS Forum, WC3 consortium, OpenDSL consortium and UPnP Forum. A publicly traded company on the Nasdaq Stock Market, Virata was founded in 1993 and is headquartered in Santa Clara, California.
