Lightscape Networks’ Platform Transmits Live 10 Gbps Traffic in Europe

PETAH TIKVA, ISRAEL, -- Lightscape Networks, an member of the ECI Telecom Group (ECI Telecom: NASDAQ:ECIL) and an international leader in optical networking, today announced the introduction, on schedule, of a 10 Gbps interface for its next-generation XDM multi-service, multi-layer hybrid optical platform. This major enhancement to Lightscape Networks’ flagship product family delivers unprecedented scalability for metropolitan networks from the metro access layer to the metro core and regional. The XDM platform features a breakthrough single-architecture approach and allows service providers to build next-generation services, through modular expansion of the same platform.

Lightscape Networks can now transmit multiple traffic streams, such as 10Gbps OC-192/STM-64, lower rate SONET/SDH/PDH, Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and video over SONET/SDH and DWDM networking fabrics of the XDM. Lightscape Networks’ existing systems have a built-in 10Gbps capability, allowing customers to easily upgrade to 10Gbps with virtually no disruption and a minimum of investment.

XDM is the only multi-function metro platform for voice, video and data that scales cost effectively to 10Gbps, for both ring and mesh architectures. Designed and manufactured in-house, the XDM’s 10Gbps transceivers include Performance Monitoring (PM) and outband Forward Error Correction (FEC). The 10Gbps version is already transmitting live traffic with one customer in Scandinavia. Lightscape Networks already has several 10 Gbps systems installed worldwide.

The enhanced XDM is also currently the only 10Gpbs platform to offer carriers the flexibility of starting with a pure optical network and switching to hybrid or vice versa using the same core architecture. Service providers with traditional SDH/SONET networks and those with pure optical networks or plans for optical migration can benefit from having 10 Gbps available on the same platform. Moreover, they are interchangeable according to the service provider’s individual requirements.

The XDM metro solution is a major benefit for carriers looking to solve capacity bottleneck problems in the metro network. XDM's superior level of integration provides the flexibility and scalability that allows established and emerging service providers to build networks that can meet the future demands for rapid and unpredictable network growth.

”The XDM's build-as-you-grow architecture allows service providers to scale their networks cost effectively, while in-service, to multiple 10Gbps over DWDM networks," said Eran Dariel, President and CEO of Lightscape Networks. “Carriers will be ready to offer on-demand high bandwidth services based on the quick and easy end-to-end provisioning capability of the XDM”
As a scalable, single platform, the XDM supports in a single shelf, Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) networking, multi-ring SONET/SDH, a distributed digital cross connect system (DCS) allowing non-blocking E1 granularity, a full suite of intelligent optical networking capabilities and instant end-to-end service provisioning.

Lightscape Networks' products are sold globally to some of the world's major carriers and emerging service providers including Deutsche Telekom, NTL, D2 Vodafone, Telemach, Hansol, Banverket and Globe Telecom. Lightscape Networks’ technology is undergoing trials in the U.S. and Canada. Sales of Lightscape Networks' complete family of products in 2000 totaled $260 million.
