London, England – 20 June 2001 - The Italian Ministry of Justice (MOJ), IBM's largest Italian customer, has chosen Plato Computer Services (UK) Ltd., in partnership with Memorex-Telex, to project manage the migration from proprietary to open hardware for its prisoner administration software in a contract valued at over £1.5 million. The agreement calls for Plato and Memorex to implement the move from 68 IBM 9371 computer systems to new Unix systems based on Data General/EMC Aviion 3700 machines. The implementation will utilise Fundamental Softwatre Inc.'s Flex-ES mainframe Operating System hosting software and Plato's specialist conversion and implementation personnel.

Gerry Litchfield, Plato's Partnerships and Alliances Manager, said, "Winning this contract clearly endorses our international experience, skills, and capabilities in project managing and implementing large, high value European projects for Blue Chip organisations." He explained that Plato will also provide expertise in the implementation, installation and technical support areas, together with subsequent second level product support.

The 68 DG/EMC machines will be located throughout Italy at major prison sites, with Token-Ring and SLDC links, or LANS, to a further 100 remote sites, as well as to the central mainframe's MVS system. User communications will be via statutory PC-based Terminal Emulation packages and Memorex-Telex terminal controllers with operations handled through emulated mainframe consoles on DG/UX machines. Data is to be routed between machines across the network using IBM routers and PCs.
