Sports company wins £5,000 in awards

sponsored by Webcom.

Hockey Heaven (www.hockeyheaven.co.uk), based in Southall, has won the London final of the UK online for business/InterForum E-Commerce Awards – sponsored in the region by Webcom.

The company, which provides sells quality hockey and sports equipment, received a first prize of £5,000 at a ceremony at the Financial Times building on 19 June.

Hockey Heaven also received an extra prize, donated by The Institute of Export, of a free one day short course of their choice.

The company fought off strong competition from nine other hopefuls to win the top prize and will now go forward to the national final of the Awards in July; the overall national winner will be awarded £30,000.

Deep Bassi, Managing Director at Hockey Heaven, said: “I’m really pleased that the judges were impressed by both our business model and our web site. All the other entries looked really good, I’m so proud that we won.”

The company, which has just two employees, was rewarded because of its successful use of the Internet and e-commerce. Hockey Heaven has been incredibly successful in the nine months that it has been trading, and has recently been selected by the Scottish Hockey Association to be the official site for the men’s World Cup Qualifying tournament. This is all from a site that was started from scratch and had no existing retail outlet or brand awareness.

Second prize of £2,000 went to Street Bike (www.streetbike.net), an Internet-based bicycle courier service which also uses mobile phone technology. Third prize of £1,000 was awarded to Jermyn Street shirt maker, Charles Tyrwhitt (www.tyrwhitt.co.uk).

Webcom 2001 has sponsored the London regional awards for the third year in a row. Del Fasoranti, Portfolio Director for CMP Europe, organisers of Webcom 2001, commented: “It was extremely difficult to select a winner as the drive, dynamism and hard work displayed by all of the 168 businesses that entered in the region has been amazing. Hockey Heaven is a prime example of a company which has grasped e-business and used it to its advantage and I wish them all the best in the national final.”

Hugh Allen, General Manager at The Institute of Export said: “The Institute of Export welcomes this opportunity to lend its support to The E-Commerce Awards and we would like to congratulate Hockey Heaven on its win. This competition recognises the efforts of those companies already winning the all important e-commerce race. British businesses need to be encouraged to seize the wealth of opportunities presented by new technologies.”

The E-Commerce Awards celebrate and reward best practice in the use of electronic business amongst companies with fewer than 250 employees in the UK, and are open to any company that is using technologies to improve their business practices, whether it is through a web site or back office systems.

Now in their third year the awards were set up by UK online for business - a partnership between industry and government - and InterForum, the not-for-profit campaign group of companies that helps British businesses to trade electronically.
