ATHENS, June 18, 2001 ¾ Clarent® Corporation (Nasdaq: CLRN), a leading provider of softswitch and Internet Protocol (IP) communications solutions, and Ideal Telecom AE, a pioneer voice and data communications company in Greece, today announced a strategic agreement regarding Ideal Telecom's purchase of Clarent IP communication solutions. Ideal Telecom provides integrated telecommunications services to the Greek domestic and international market. With the purchase of new hardware and software from Clarent, Ideal Telecom will be able to offer more comprehensive voice-over IP network facilities and services.

"As one of the leading providers of alternative telecommunications systems in Greece, we offer VoIP services at very competitive prices," said Costas Vasilatos, product manager, Ideal Telecom AE. "By selecting Clarent, we believe we are in the best position to achieve that goal."

The strategic agreement covers the purchase by Ideal Telecom of Clarent products including Clarent Gateways 400 and 1200, the Clarent softswitch comprised of the Clarent Command Center™ and the Clarent Gatekeeper. They are also purchasing the infrastructure necessary for interfacing Ideal Telecom with other telecommunications carriers' networks through SS7. Currently, Ideal Telecom has installed a network of seventeen Clarent Gateways throughout Greece in Athens, Thessaloniki, Larissa, Patras, Heraklion (Crete), Kavala, Volos, Agrinio, Rhodes, Chios, Corfu, Argos, Halkis, Chania (Crete), Mykonos, Ioannina, and Ptolemais. Ideal Telecom intends to enlarge that network within the next two years.

"We are pleased to advance our relationship with Ideal Telecom through this strategic agreement," said John Caradimas, general manager, Greece, Clarent Corporation. "Ideal Telecom's relationship with Clarent illustrates how IP communications are revolutionizing the business model for telecommunications service providers. Clarent's solutions are enabling companies like Ideal Telecom to build networks quickly, to create an instant market presence and realize a return on their investments more rapidly than with traditional networks."
