Insight allows network administrators to see all, overcomes ‘patchwork’ management limitations
21 June, 2001 – Network management specialist Chevin is giving away ‘Insight’, a new network monitoring software tool, now available free to network administrators over the Internet. Large network vendors such as Cisco, Hewlett-Packard and 3Com have treated network management with neglect for many years, forcing customers to embrace their product strategies with little regard for the technical management implications.
Insight, however, is a single tool that provides an illuminating view of activity on a LAN. A welcome tonic for administrators who are largely tasked with managing networks blind. Insight is free for download from www.chevin.com and is intended to act as a teaser for Chevin’s high-end vendor independent network management solution – TeVISTA.
TeVISTA is designed to provide a fully detailed view of network performance, characteristics that traditional monitoring tools using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) are unable to access. TeVISTA is extraordinary because it provides total visibility of everything on a network in real time by gathering information from the ‘wire’ without relying on polling devices on the network. By using this intelligent method of seeking information, TeVISTA alleviates the burden on network bandwidth that other SNMP based management systems can cause.
“With Insight Chevin is giving network administrators what they deserve, a real chance to throw away the shackles of working ‘blind’ on their network,” said John Earley, CEO of Chevin. “Once you’ve opened your eyes to what is really happening to your network, then and only then can you efficiently invest time and resources wisely to improve its performance”.
The monitoring tool provides knowledge about critical features of network activity, which can affect network performance such as, bandwidth utilisation, number of broadcasts and multicasts, number of conversations taking place on the network and the number of protocols being used.
“Downtime will continue to rear its ugly head if the industry remains blind to information regarding its root cause,” added Earley. “The first lesson of network management is that you can never have total control if you don’t have total visibility, but the industry still continues to rely on partially sighted network management tools. Insight allows you to open your eyes to what’s really going on.”

Chevin is a leading provider of innovative software systems that enable organizations to manage and optimize their mission-critical networks. Its flagship product, TeVISTA, is platform-independent and gives a real-time overview of everything that is happening on the network as well as historical reports. All sizes of distributed networks can be managed remotely through intuitive graphical interfaces. Likely problems can be anticipated and avoided so that downtime is prevented, and network capacity can be scaled to meet demand.
Chevin was founded in 1989 and has offices in Europe and the US. Its software provides solutions for organizations whose business success depends on the effectiveness of their network and who find ease of use and a low cost of ownership particularly appealing. Customers include telcos and service providers, blue-chip companies, e-businesses and medium and large enterprises. Users of Chevin technology include AT&T, BT, ICL, British Gas, Siemens, Securicor and Reuters.
