Research Shows That the Flexibility Message is Getting Across
Research carried out this month by Rhetorik, the leading market intelligence consultancy for the network industry, shows that a third (31%) of UK companies are looking to wireless as a network solution.
Findings from a Web-based survey of IT managers at 80 key UK companies reveals that 15% have already taken on board wireless LAN and there are significant signs of growth, with a further 16% of companies researched planning to install a WLAN in the near future.
Rhetorik found that 75% of those IT decision-makers who plan to install a WLAN intend to do so within the next year.
Flexibility is the main motive. Most of the decision-makers installing WLAN technology in their organisation have done so for reasons of mobility and flexibility. 66% of the organisations researched cited the potential for LAN users to access real-time information anywhere in the building as a reason for implementing the solution. Mobile workers also feature heavily in the plans of UK organisations. 50% of companies planning a WLAN said that enabling mobile users to log on to the network easily was a major factor in their decision to install the technology.
Companies are, however, still in the dark on pricing. 50% of the decision-makers thought that wireless LAN network interface cards (NICs) compare unfavourably in price to wired NICs. 41% admitted that they simply did not know how the costs added up.
Lack of information is also holding back market potential. Most alarmingly of all, 47% of those companies who have no plans to install a WLAN said that they did not know enough about them to make a decision about investing in one.
While it is clear that the networking industry is getting the flexibility message through to the end user, Rhetorik believes that wireless vendors and WSPs (wireless service providers) need to invest heavily in the short term in educating the market - especially on price and costing - in order to accelerate its growth.
