ID Data plc, the fast growing UK supplier of secure transaction systems and smart card services, today announces the Company has entered into a contract with Prism Holdings (Pty) Limited, a South African-based leader in secure electronic transaction technology, to deliver Prism's range of SIMetrix and aSIMetrix secureSIMs, for mobile operators in the Far East. ID Data will supply high security Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards with initial orders worth over £2 million.

The aSIMetrix product, that includes both a Wireless Internet Browser (WIB) and advanced cryptographic and banking features, offers operators and other users a platform on which to develop secure, transparent applications in the business-to-business and business-to-consumer arenas.

The SIMs allow secure m-commerce transactions to take place using a WIB developed by Prism in accordance with the Sonera Smartrust WIB specification. Over 70 global GSM network operators have adopted this technology. Prism’s aSIMetrix product also incorporates a host of additional transaction-security applications (plug-ins) to cater for the non-repudiation, identification, authentication, and privacy (encryption) needs of mobile commerce (m-commerce) for the foreseeable future.

The focus of Prism and ID Data's joint efforts has centred on resolving some of the major issues surrounding the build and personalisation of the SIM cards, in order to reduce time-to-market. The SIMs currently use 32K & 64K flash silicon-based technology, although ROM masked versions are also being considered. These developments represent a significant step forward for m-commerce and secure transaction technology using flash silicon for the first time.

The partnership has resulted in the parties already receiving firm orders for volume delivery of the new SIMS in the next few months. Peter Cox, CEO of ID Data says the decision to partner with Prism followed intensive due diligence of the aSIMetrix SIM. “It became clear that the Prism product was far ahead of the competition in its ability to host secure transitive applications on the SIM; and this first GSM announcement has once again confirmed the capability of ID Data to find major business and beat the current leaders in the GSM market in gaining leading edge contracts.”

Steve Sidley, Sales Director of Prism commented: “A partnership with ID Data serves to increase our current global reach and will buttress our own supply chain network and given the future of transitive m-commerce, we are extremely excited about our relationship with this innovative company.”

The growth potential for secure WIB-based SIMs is encouraging as the products will allow banks and similar organisations to integrate secure transaction processing into their current account, credit card and debit card product offerings for high net worth mobile clients. They will also open secure over-the-air (OTA) access to personal account information for all customers, which will further advance the relationships being developed between mobile operators and the banks to offer enhanced value added services.
