Newport's role will be to advise Clarent's Office of the President on the company's strategic initiatives, cost alignment, and operational planning.

Newport served as a vice president at VeriFone, a leading supplier of point-of-sale terminals for electronic payment transactions. During his six years there, his responsibilities included marketing, sales, service, software development, and finance. He has founded and managed wireless data, enterprise software, and magazine publishing firms. Newport also designed and implemented production and business information systems for a division of the Hearst Corporation.
